Default Headphone repairs

Hey guys

Is it possible to fix headphones? I was lent a pair of Senns and when the owner got them back, he said that one speaker was not working. They seemed fine when they left me though I had had some trouble but it seemed to be one of my amplifier's phono connection. My other amp worked fine. Now I faced with having to replace them

Grado is repairing my SR-60's for $25. They are five years old and out of warranty.

Hi hardbop

thanks for your response. I will take contact someone in the UK to ask if they can repair them. At least I should get a second opinion first.

Just the other day I was fiddling and I broke a soldered wire in my head phones. I took them down to radio shack/tv repair shop. I got if resoldered for $8.

Try switching the l and r plugs of the headphone around, if the sound then works the other way round, then you know its the cable; I know that some Senn HD600 cables were weak.

Sennheiser acknowledged this as they sent me a new cable for free when mine broke.

The plugs themselves could be loose. The headphone cable connects to the headphones with a socket. Make sure it's plugged all the way in.

On the Senn 580/600's the cable wiring is very fine and eventually breaks down where it flexes just before the earcup connector. Seems to hold sound while the strands break until the last one goes, and then the sound will come and go as the wires make and break contact. You can test this by flexing the wire and seeing how the sound changes.

As the cables on these unplug from the headphones themselves replacement is easy, I've replaced mine twice so far in the last 6 years.

Thanks guys for the advice. They are eH2200's and the cables do not unplug. The units are sealed so cannot open them. The speaker is completely dead. I found someone on the internet who sells new capsules and someone local who will fit it. It will cost about half the price of a new pair so I am wondering....

Sennheiser has a great warranty service.
If you can find a way to prove they are purchased within 2 years, you can get them fixed for free.
If it's out of warranty, they wouldn't charge more than 33% of the MSRP of the headphones including shipping.

Hi Unclewai

Can't do that as the person who uses them cannot wait until they get fixed that way. But thanks anyway. Anyway, today I managed to get inside them and unclip the wires and found a supplier for the capsules. It looks pretty easy to replace the one that does not work. The thing that I am wondering about now is, that, as it takes a while to run them in, will there be a noticable difference with the new one? The person who uses them has very sensitive ears ( a musician) He thinks that he might have problems with just one new capsule. Any idea please?

Is the person who owns these taking the p**s or what? - I thought he was a friend of yours? You seem to be bending over backwards to put this right and all he can do is throw up obstacles for you... Friends like this you don't need

Hi Oink1

Yes you are right

The thing is that he expects me to replace them (they are two and a half years old). I didn't ask to borrow them he offered. I cannot really afford to do that although I have given him the full price before I opened them when he started to talk about the new capsule not being run in (and not matching) He will return the money if I get them fixed satisfactory. Now I think that replacing the dead can will be easy and much cheaper as I can do it myself. It will just clip in. Even buying two new capsules is cheaper than replacing whole thing so I might just do that. I will NEVER use anyone elses cans EVER again (sob!) If it had been me who owned them the most I would have taken would have been half the new price. They were already getting on in age. But he thinks it right to replace them with new.

I would say conclude your dealings with him and draw a line under the friendship - Expecting you to stump up the full price for 2.5 yr old cans is outrageous and downright nasty if you ask me How much is a new set?

The new set is $96 including postage Oink1, ok not a great amount but a bit steep for me at present. Yes I have wondered whether to do what you said. I feel duty bound to stump up for a new capsule(s) though.

nikongod, thanks a lot for that link, I will keep my eyes on it. Though by the time postage is added to the UK, if the price rises too much, I might as well buy two new capsules or one if I get advice that it will work ok. I will see. I have e-mailed the shop they came from and asked if replacing one capsule will work out ok. I couldn't believe how easily they came apart, when the owner said they were sealed. Seems like he saw the opportunity to get new cans.

Later...I have just heard from the supplier and he said that yes there will be a difference particularly if they have had heavy use and that will be why a can has died anyway. Two new capsules with postage is $58 so bang goes my new printer, oh well I have learned a lesson.
