isn't the material around the driver is some kind of metal, mine has grey colour, so that means mine is older version?
Mine is a very light grey, or white metalic color. My old ones were black silk.
I would guess your's is the "new" version.

Those with the black silk fabric, were definitely a bit darker, than those with the white, or silver, metalic fabric - though the HD650s very well may be a bit darker than other phones, even with this update. I haven't heard the updated HD650s, only the updated HD580/600s - which seem quite a bit brighter than the "old" ones, certainly... moreso, than the HD650s.

If I can get a pair of older HD600's for about $175 - is it worth it? how big is the sound difference? (I'll be running off laptop audio through an M-Audio USB, into a Marantz 2270 amp.)
I'm also quite surprised that no one has discovered the difference between the black covered and white covered 650s before. The difference in sound was so obvious to me and the owner of the newer pair.

Well I own an old hd650 and a new hd600 and definitely prefer the old hd650. It's just...better. Only thing the hd600 does better is some more airiness in its sound.
I decided to coin the term for the updated version of the HD650 the HD650[b]...
someone mentioned calling it the HD700 because it sounded so different (improved?), but i don't like the idea of calling it that.
I just removed foam and checked my HD650. It's white as shown in the picture. I bought this piece around Oct or Nov 2006. So this WHITE version is not something new but was available in 2006 itself.
