Default The HD555, How does it compare to the HD25-1 in SQ??

I upgraded from the PX100 to the HD25-1, and it was a huge jump! THe hd25-1 is "rungs and rungs" better than the PX100... and it doesn't have to be amped (i'm convinced it doesn't sound any different)!

But I was wondering, How does the HD555 compare to the HD25-1 in terms of SQ? I know it's much much cheaper (can be had for <$60), but can it compare in sound?
One thing I heard about the HD25-1 is that it doesn't sound like a >$150 headphone...

No, you will feel many downgrade in sound and probably a little change in sound signature. HD25-1 is quite neutral and quite bright in the highs, while quite bassy and have good bass impact, HD555 isn't bright, a bit of bass shy and much more boring sound but have bigger soundstage. I much prefer the HD25-1 for rock and all other thing except for classical which the HD555 is better at IMO.

If you wanna upgrade the HD25-1, you could just recabled it with HD650 cable which you could buy for around 15$.

Btw if it doesn't sound like 150$, then what does it sound like?

Soundstage doesn't mean much without extended frequency reponse, detail, and dynamics. The HD25 has plenty of the last three traits. It would be a poor deal to trade those three to get just the one.

You can "hear" many interesting assumptions reading this forum and internet in general. I prefer the HD25-1's even to the HD600's. The HD555's are mid-fi headphones and that's it. The HD595's are significantly better, more refined in bass and trebles, better resolving in the midrange region, don't get the mid-bass hump and... I still prefer the HD25-1's.
