I have been told there will be a new K701 (read K702) soon, it will be exactly the same, but for professional use with detachable cables and a black/blue colour. The K701 will still be a valid product for the consumer market.
Hope this answers a few questions. So much for closeout K701s. Dealers jumping the gun. And there will always be dealers who discount... there's a lot of noise out there so believe what you want to. Time will tell.
So modding the cables will be as easy as switching Sennheiser HD6xx cables...

Why doesn't AKG look to the past, where they made their best headphones.. Sextetts, 340, 501, & K1000..

Useless thread. This thread was their "reliable source".
Another "guy" on AKG forums claims he knows:

yo,
not that it's a big deal; the 702 isn't replacing the 701; rather the 701 MKII is replacing it. the 702 is in the HD line of headphones, although it's nearly exactly the same as the 701S and the 701 MKII. The only thing that's changing here is the color (MKII is a deep blue color). The only difference - rather than the color - between the three is that the 702 HD has a wired design, no detachable cord.

K702 info
This morning I spoke with a friend who works at AKG USA. He said that the K-701's are NOT being discontinued.
The K-702 is basically the same phone with a couple of changes. The main one being a detachable cable (The pro market likes detachable cables), and the second being an extreme toning down of the color. Pro users have objected to the white 701's, so the 702's will be a more traditional Black.
So once again, The K-701's are NOT BEING DISCONTINUED! The K-702 will basically be a Pro oriented version of the 701's.

Do you know if it will just be a cosmetic change or will they actually change something important to be a "Pro" oriented version?

What my friend told me would lead me to believe that there are no technical changes, except for the removable cable.
He also said that the K-701's are not being discontinued. Knowing him he would have mentioned to me if the 701's were being updated to a Mk2 version. So I would be very surprised if there were any changes to the 701's.
When the 702's come out I'm sure some will say that they are better/worse but the difference will be the detachable cable and the color.
AKG sort of prides itself on not changing models too often.

The detachable cable sounds like a very good idea. It makes for recabling like a Sennheiser much easier. All quality headphones should be made with a detachable cable, unless there's some drawback to that I haven't thought of?

Connectors and sockets are convenient but may degrade sound more than hard wiring (I'm assuming) as they could add resistance or whatnot. Also theres the problem of more places for oxidation.

Given the variations of K240 sextett, K340, and K501, I would say they pride themselves on changing models without telling anyone.

Well, versions at least. Different sounding versions.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but they recently came out with the 1X2/2X2 headphones as replacements for the 1X1/2X1 headphones which came out as replacements for the 1x0/2X0 headphones, which they say sound very similar.

Agreed and I know you were responding to the previous post, but in this case I've never seen such poor stock cabling on a full-sized can in my life. A recabler showed me the cut K701s cord recently. I couldn't believe it. It reminded me of individual strands in cheap telephone wiring. Anything that would encourage cable replacement for these cans is a net positive in my book.
And I've loved the eccentric white. Made them stand out. Curious about the black though.

I don't think it matters. The Sony Qualia 10 and HD650s are world renowned cans they aren't hard wired.
