Once the stock of remaining K-701s dries up, the consensus will be that the K-701 sounds better than the K-702.
Unc,
As usual, I think you may be correct. If anyone doesn't have a problem with the fit of the 701, a closeout or used buy will be a good deal. Especially if the dealers try to price the 702s at $400.

I love it when something nice, white and simple comes out, and then people label it as "iPod stylistics" or "Apple Fanboyism"...
Then what would you call the people who likes to buy brown colour stuff? ZUNE lover? but wait... no one really makes brown colour stuff...
Can't you stop your "thinking"? This is flagship audiophile headphone, i don't care about ipods, zunes whatever, i just can't understand why AKG needs to do advertisement of non-portable headphones with ipod mentions. I repeat, it was on their (akg) website, but, now they changed the description so no ipod-ism anymore.

no, i cant stop my "thinking". and quotations dont always stand for "thinking"... it can be used as being considered as italics or bold or w/e u want.
and also, theres always a reason when they do that. Its because right now, everyone seem to use ipods and whatnot (yes, non audiophile, your avg teen or whatnot). so when they pair it up with ipod, people will start to think its good and will buy it.
it attracts attention to the general public. the general public isnt going to know AKG through an ad with a nice tube amp, its because the general public isnt going to use it.
you may say: well, look at the cost, people are going to go crazy when they see it. and yes of course, they will, thats why they are trying to target a richer market who dont care about money.
there are always reasons to why certain companies choose whatnot to do in an ad.

Yes, but it's still unclear to me, because serious audiogeeks tend to grimace when they hear "ipod". So if you wanna sell a product to those people it's better to stay away from ipod theme. Can't say for people in general, but i do know some men, who overlooked the k701 thinking it's "unserious and ipodish". Furthermore, the k701 can't and will not sound good from ipod headphone out, so that random guy who brings his ipod to "akg store" and tries the k701 most likely will not be satisfied.
I know Akg is well aware how to run their biz better than me, but still, there're things that i just can't undersand.

Well, if you are a seriously audiogeek, then chances are, u wont need to see an ad to buy it =D. Think about it: If you were an enthusiast for... let say... graphic cards. you dont need them to show you that it can run 1000fps in an ad for you to buy it.
And yes, while i do agree with you about can't and wont sound good... it doesnt matter, its about the trend and general public. they are trying to attract more people into the audiophile market so the overall market generates a lot more money than just the "audiogeeks" that buy stuff.

People say this about large cans all the time here but I think that it's wrong. Very wrong. I'm in no way a ipod freak but I have a 5G video and a classic and I think the headphone out sounds awesome for a portable.
I loved the sound of the 5G until I ran out of drive space so I got the classic. The headphone out from the classic is just amazing.
No the ipod will not drive these cans to their full potential but the SQ is still amazing for a portable player. So to say that a highend headphone CANNOT and WILL NOT sound good is just ridiculous.
BTW, I have not tried the k701 but I have a HD600, SA5K, DT990, SR60, CD3K, F1 and D1k and they all sound awesome directly from the ipod.

Have you heard them through a home amp with proper source??
All my cans were bought for home use. most before the invention of the ipod. Though cans mainly used recording, I do have a LBII, P2, D2 and Headstage for relaxing.

Looking at the adapter (1/4 > 1/8 inch) AKG supplies to connect the 701 to a portable device shows that it was never meant for that purpose.
