I'm loving my 225's with the reversed 414 pads. So comfortable, so involving, so easy to drive. I can plug them into anything and they deliver the goods. These are my first Grados and I have real trouble letting go of them. Maybe I shouldn't?

I'm hoping though that the HF-1 will replace them, as I finally got them back from Grado (channel imbalance), but they haven't been in the house long enough for me to make up my mind. I'm not sure the HF-1 are up to the hype, at least from my sources and amps.

One of my problems with the HF-1 is that the 414 pads are so much more comfortable than bowls, but they don't fit the HF-1 sound signature too well. HF-1 are clearly voiced for the bowls.

So the 225 are still the rocking king of the household and HF-1 have to put up a serious fight for the crown.

I love my SR225s with the flats. I use 'em at work on a simple, humble Headroom Bithead. I find the bowls are a little too harsh in the mids and highs for my taste though. The flats smooth everything out for me without sacrificing too much detail as well as heightens the "punch." I save the bowls for the RS1's at home.

Yesterday I went out and bought my fourth pair of 225's! No, I don't own four pairs, rather three have come and gone, and now I am the happy father of a fourth baby!

The 225's just do something to me at that price point.

Cheechoz,
Noticed you sold your SR325i’s after praising them
http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...ighlight=sr325
Just traded in my SR225’s for the SR325i’s and find them better overall, although I’ve only got a few hours on them.
Mind you, if I didn’t find the SR225’s so appealing I would not of gotten curious to see how far Grado can go, I know RS2---RS1……..
My SR225’s had some cosmetic problems like the paint coming off, http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=163628 and the dealer offered to take them back so I opted for the upgrade for a minimal charge, so far I’m glad I did.

The 225's don't sound right to me without the bowls. The soundpicture gets fragmented, and what I gain in reduced high and mid peakiness I lose + in terms of loss of overall coherence.

I like them for a wide variety of music, particularly pop. I don't agree that they are the premier heavy metal headphone, as all heavy metal I have is WAY too trebly with them. Classical music is not good most of the time because of the high frequency push, it just destroys the sound picture. But jazz and pop really sound awesome with them.

Word...the HF-1's are capable of kickin' a** but IMO they do need the bowls. I haven't tried a taped bowls mod...I'll have to search out what that even is... HF-1's with bowls are incredible and, luckily, I find them very comfie.

You're in luck! I just made this for another thread. My method is electrical tape, because it's wider and covers nearly the entire surface area of the circumference. Also, I use reversed taped bowls; you can put them on either forwards or backwards, depending on your sonic preference and comfort needs.

They truly are kick-donkey phones and they are starting to grow on me. Doing some A-B comparisons to SR225 resulted in a clear victory for the HF-1. Now the 225 are on loan to my friend, who is considering buying them.

It is possible to find a comfortable position for the bowls after some adjusting, but the reversed modded HD414-pads are still quite a bit more comfy.

I did try the tape-mod with the bowls on my 225 some time ago, but I haven't tried it yet with the HF-1. As it stands, I feel the HF-1 has plenty of bass already so enhancing it with tape may not be worthwhile for me. It doesn't hurt to try though...

Time for a revival of this thread. Only 2 pages ? K81DJ with 50 Plus ???
I guess it doesn't need that many since it is mentioned in so many other threads.
I have had mine for a while and LOVE them. I don't even use an amp, straight out the iPod.
Listening to the Dead right now from them (5/26/77)
Makes me want to upgrade to RS2, but what would I do with those out of an iPod ?? Get one of those new Go-Vibes for $75 SR-71 for $300
HELP !
