The SR60 straight from the headphone-out of a $40 PCDP was my first taste of audio done right - and what a heady savor that was! My son is now using those SR60 from the headphone-out of his $50 PCDP - AND LOVING IT!!! I borrow them back from time to time to refresh my first-hand experience of that sound. It is a good, solid, fully respectable and enjoyable hi-fi sound - and a fantastic introduction to the joys of audio-foolery.
Thanks, gsferrari, for this "Valentine", if you will, to the first love of many of us, the Grado SR60.

Ha haa!!! I remember that pic!! Wayne was like WTF are these guys doing Man...good times...

I'm very glad to have taken my SR-60's to that meet. Guru you are following Matt's path going back to SR60's appreciation, even after experiencing electrostats sound! That speaks quite well of the SR60's indeed.
|
It does indeed!! I was just about to mention Matt who went from OMega2 + KGSS straight back to SR-60 and CHA47 out of a Rio or something...
A year back this was...and I thought he was positively NUTS!
And here I am...doing the exact same thing...
The reasoning behind the MDR SA5000 is not because I expect to "LOVE the sound" but because I need an ultra-resolving ultra-sensitive headphone to tune my amps. No other reason...
I have been contacted about selling, trading the SR-60s several times but I have passed on every opportunity because I LOVE these headphones...loved them from the first time I saw a pair (in Raul's hands at the Fl meet...). I took those headphones for the entire weekend and felt really sad when he took them back
Then I had to rush to India and it was only after I came back that I could order a pair for myself...the "longing" for the SR-60s is a kind of longing I could never feel/ never felt for any other headphone...

funny this thread came up, as I have been using my girlfriend's sr60s (well her dad's pair) and I am loving them for on the go.
since she now uses my ksc35s, and my portapro 2s have a busted driver after i loaned them out, i've been using them and loving the sr60s!!!
with that said, i don't find them to be the end all be all.
they are really fun cans, i love listening to rock, rap and country with them
but man, do they SUCK when it comes to classical and jazz. it's horrible!

Amen, SR60 was my first pair of real cans too. Driven right out of my Fortissimo III/Ipod at the time. Now I've moved on to groovier things, but I'll always remember my first love.

I disagree I loved my Sr-60 also with classical music and jazz, full, dynamic sound... a little compressed but... who cares when the sound is so exciting and involving?

it's funny you mention berg and coltrane, because it was Giant Steps on the SR60s that really turned me off to them.
and don't get me started on Berg. The compression really ruins the experience for me. Especially for pieces that really shine with a strong sense of atmosphere.
hey it's just my opinion. but don't think that the sr60s do Berg and Coltrane more justice than my 600s coming out of the sha

Through all the high end headphones that have come and gone, the SR-60 has always remained by my side

we'll just have to agree to disagree, then. i think that the SR-60's are very interesting to listen to with pieces that are normally presented with a large soundstage.

Green Day is playing in the foreground, American Idiot, track 2. PS-1's driven by the Melos using CBS/Hytron 5814's. Connected to the Melos is a Shanling heavily moddified, T-100, Bendix 6385's, the rarest type of tube on earth is plopped in the buffer stage. Connecting the amp and the cd player are a pair of audio metallurgy ga-zeros. Quite the system, nothing to scoff at.
This system pleases me. I listen to this system as much as possible, though admittedly I swap between the RS-1's and HP-1's and PS-1's (PS-1's being a newly acquired piece of hardware).
Do I love it? Oh yeah, undeniably. Few things in life make me forget the crap world we live in. Fewer things remind me of how great this world really is.
Know what? I bet that if I were to evaluate the joy I get from this system vs. the SR60's powered by a Pioneer 25 disc changing mini-system, I would say they are equal. WHAT?!??!?!?! No way!!?!! Man, that Zanth kid is bloody deaf!
Well, perhaps, but back in the day, back in the late 90's I took the plunge, I dove head first into "audiophilia" by researching at Headroom and Goodcans and I ordered the SR60's (about $144 Canadian at the time). I have never experienced revelation as the first day I used the SR6's. Burn-in? Who needs it when the SR60's were so vastly superior to every single crap headphone I had ever used. Sadly, I never knew I was using crap headphones before. I did that day though, that July summer day in '97.
My family was driving up to TO, we passed through Kingston just to pick up my cans. I plugged them into a first gen Shockwave PCDP, I was in awe. I had tears in my eyes. I felt like a sissy. I didn't care (3 younger brothers in the van as well as my best friend).
The following months saw me walking around campus with these cans. Oh the stares I received! No one was into wearing BIG cans at the time. Not like today. Again, I didn't care. The music was all that mattered and the SR60's were delivering it like I had never heard it before.
Tough day at school?? No problem, some Chicane and my uber comfy recliner and some SR60's strapped to my head took away any and all woes. Girl troubles? Stressed about that next mid-term? Whatever, who cares, nothing that listenin' to my Grados wouldn't take care of.
Appreciation Thread for the SR60's? Bloody Hell, more like a dedicated shrine in my house. No phone I own gets more reverence.
Sure, my wife uses them now exclusively, but they stick within the fam, they are going no where. My first step into audiophilia, my first step into the true solace of music.
