Very nice step-by-step. I've never thought the highs on the RS-1 were even remotely a problem, but I'm sure many will be interested in it.

Dude! I am SO gonna use that next time.
With empty .22 shell casings, you could even mount them on another piece of metal in whatever pattern you want and simply punch all the holes at once.
Kick butt idea. Thanks.

I just hit up the shack. They had 33-380 in stock. From their website, I don't see any difference to the 33-379. Stupid 414 pads didn't come in the mail today...Off to mod with these!!

Nevermind. The 33-380 are too small 1.85 in on the 33-380, 2.6 inches on the 33-379. Back to the shack!

Cheaper if you just buy a sheet of filter foam and cut out the round part and punch some holes.

You might try hardware stores; ask if they have any sorts of 'filtering' foam that might be mounted in front of fan intakes.

s1rrah's always coming up with seemingly simple but brilliant mods...
Great idea, yet again.

Gread mod, simple, excellent step by step by the OP.
This is also a great way to take relieve some of the discomfort with longer sessions where the driver surface presses against parts of the ears..(for some)
well done

Thanks for the props.
What you mention is one of the nicest parts of this mod regarding daily use: the fact that it cushions the driver housing against the ear!
That's been my biggest complaint regarding the RS1's (the gazillion other finer points not withstanding, of course!) .. that the driver assembly vibrates against my ear when listening to bass heavy tracks.
The 'shack hack' mod substantially reduces the "vibrating my ears" phenomenon (as well as yielding near endless possibilities at modifying the stock sound).
...
@chipp: yes. we do.
(since deciding to keep my year old 6400/mushkin/7900GT setup for at least a second full year .. I've had a hard time finding new mods/reviews to post to OCN (feel like a cheapskate!) ... so been trying to hack some stuff out of the audio corner here at head-fi. )
fun stuff.

Reason???
Seems this question is best answered with more questions:
1. Why would a Sennheiser HD580 owner order HD600 grills?
2. Why would a Grado RS1/RS2 owner order the well known and appreciated "Flat Pads"???
3. Why would any given user of any given decent headphone chose to purchase a cable upgrade???
...
The answer ... or, answers... of course, would be and is ...
BECAUSE IT MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE SOUND!!!!!!
