Question Find me the funneriest headphones to replace my SR-80's for under 200 (lots of info)

The thread title could also read: Can I power Beyer 770 pros with a portable amp for a decent price.

Long Time Lurker, Finally going to ask some ?

I had some Grado 80's that were nice cans and I was never satisfied with. I had all kinds of quality issues with them and most of the time they weren't "fun" enough for me as much as I tried to make myself feel all audiophile by talking myself into loving them. Don't get me wrong, their were certain times when I was absolutely blown away by them (for some reason I always loved Jimmy Eat World on them). I never had real comfort issues with them either, I kind of miss that scratchy feeling even. One of my other problems with the 80’s is that music never seemed to “sustain” to me, it was always their and gone too soon.

I'm thinking I'm going to go for a "fun" headphone this time and the 770 is shaping up to be the one from what I read. I feeling that next year I will be spending some time on my laptop though so I don't know if I might want to go with the E4's instead. I would rather have something I could take on and off though. They would have the added benefit of being usable with my PSP though. The Super Fi Pro's are a choice also but they might be a bit pricey for a product that I'm not very sure about. I'm just a college student (about done though) so I'm not looking to spend a ton.

The Beyers look like a good price point (about 150ish) but by the sounds of it I will be needing an amp. This may end up helping me if I ever get around to fixing my SR-80's (bad cable, bad connections on one side, and a speaker that constantly fell off) it would be nice to try them with a bit better source (I was using an old creative cd style mp3 player and sound blaster live back then). My setup right now is just a Panasonic xr-25. My music is usually high bitrate MP3 and I also do a decent amount of gaming. I plan on buying an Iriver or Iaudio soon too.

My musical taste. Is anywhere from Folk to Techno(IDM) really, but very heavy on Deftones/Metalica type metal/rock, 90’s alternative (Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins) and Jimmy Eat World/Weezer/Coheed and Cambria whiney, emo crap.
A big bonus would also be something that would sound good if I play guitar with it since I like to doodle around with my Line 6 Guitarport from time to time. Wooo that’s a lot of information. I would prefer closed headphones because I like to crank it and not annoy people, and I could use it at work too. (but if you guys still think you can really sell me on the Grado 225’s then feel free to try and make your point). Also I hear the Beyers are tanks which would be nice since, well I still don't like the idea of losing the 80's

As even the Grados did not satisfy you, I would presume that you are a picky person.

Let me warn you that the 770s are very extreme cans that fall short in many respects (well, but not in respect of material quality like the Grados). I've got mine for about 6 months now and find myself using them only for electronica and related . Anything different, especially stringed instruments, sounds better even with my cheapish 20$ KSC75s. Regarding this and your assumed pickyness...frown...

If you choose Beyers in spite of my "warnings", well, welcome to Team Beyer !!! They are great fun for sure.

You mentioned IEMs. Between the E4 and the sf5pro, I don't think it's much of a contest, the sf5pro is a more funnery phone.

You also might consider the Beyer 250-250. I found these cans fun, not in the same way as my SR-80s, which are in your face fun, but more like hang out and groove kind of fun. Hard to explain I guess.

Its not that I didn't like the Grado's on a technical level they just weren't the exact "type" of sound I was looking for I think. So I wouldn't say that I was a picky person. Does anyone know what it would cost to power the 770s? Anything cheapish and portable that would do?
