Talking Cheap sony and AT phones to recommend?

Hi,

I am taking a sound design class and the lecturer has asked us all to each buy a pair of monitoring headphones. And he told the class to 'ask Joseph. Joseph is very knowledgeable about headphones' So I find myself being an advisor of sorts for the whole class's purchases.

Now, most of the class is obviously going to go for the cheap stuff, and this is Hong Kong, so the usual suspects like the Koss are out, because by the time the mail order reaches them half the class would be over So I need to recommend cans I can buy locally here in Hong Kong, and that means Sony, AT, AKG and Beyer, mostly.

Now, I know enough about the AKG and Beyer lineup, but what do you guys know about the Sony and AT lineup? I hear good things about the Sony CD3000 (forget it), CD1700 (forget it), and CD780 (getting warmer...). Is the lineup good value for money all the way down to the CD180? I once gave the CD380 a casual listen and they were all right, I think.

What about the ATs? I know the AD9 and AD10 are good, but I don't know what's the difference between them, and both are too rich for people's tastes, anyway. What about their other stuff? I don't need you to tell me about their even more expensive stuff like the W100, W2002, etc.

Thanks guys!

The AT A500 gets pretty decent reviews and it's about $100 from Audiocubes.

For sonys, there's the obvious V6...

That's all that really gets touched on here for those two brands.

How about the Sennheiser HD280? I know that for listening pleasure people might have different opinions but I think they are good monitoring phones.

AD9 and 10 are (IMO) not that good! If anything, recommend AD7 among the open AT cans. But that's probably still too expensive...
In the closed line, the A500 (not the A700, which has a different sound) offers a sound similar to the popular A900 at a lower cost and resolution, and is an equally good deal as its big brother if not better. Not sure about any lower models though.

I will second that. The reason that I bought HD 280s in the first place was for studio work. For the price, it's hard to beat their performance.

I understand that the Audio Technica ATH-M40fs are a good set for sound engineering. Maybe not fun to listen to, but decent to work with. Dunno how much they cost over there, though.

The ATH-D40fs is supposed to be a version made for drummers, and is a little more bass-heavy.

I vote for Song V6(7506), you can see lots of DJs or band use this headphone on stage.

Woah, if that's cheap, I don't what's expensive! Hehe. I'd go with the HD280's, I thought they sounded really good and were worth the cash.
