Beyter DT70 Pro 80 ohm version, or ATH-A500/700/900

Looking for a good pair of cans for mainly home use (being able to move from my receive in the living room, to a portable, to the CDP in the bedroom, etc.)

I keep debating the DT770 Pro 80 ohm version, but for that much money ($199) I could get something like the ATH-A500 ($100) A700 ($145) or A900($195).

Would the AT line be a better choice? I basically want something that sounds like a closed, big can version of the Koss Portapro.

The DT770, even the 80 ohm version, would probably need an amp with a portable, whereas the Audiotechnicas wouldn't... So that's less money to spend. The DT770's are a little smaller, seem more durable, and have those silver velour pads....

Can someone give me some advice? I listen to alot of rock (Marilyn Manson, Rollins, Our Lady Peace) and also jazz (Miles, Coltrane) and pop (Bjork, Prince, Cibo Matto).

For these types of music, for mainly home use, which would be a batter choice?

If it's any help to you... A900 is really not a "basshead" headphone.. it's a headphone with great balance and soundstage.. but it's not "basshead" at all.

If you want that kick and punch listening to rock that just blows you away.. I don't think A900 will fit the bill.

A900 is a great rock phone, but its sound characteristic is about balance. It has a great bass, no doubt, but it in no means "strapping subwoofers to your head" as some people would describe the DT770 being.

It is exciting on both highs and lows, with accurate bass that provides good visceral impact; but it is still not the super duper bass that DT770 offers.

You know what I mean? There's a difference between being a great rock phone and a "basshead" headphone. Just like how people say Grados are just great for rock (which they are, at the detriment of having no soundstage at all, but some people like that), but it is still not a basshead headphone.

In addition, it's just a great all-around headphone that's good from classical, jazz, rock, pop... and just about all genres. It's good for everything... that doesn't mean there isn't genre specific headphone that's better in one or two specific aspects though.

It is pretty rockin' but it doesn't have the slam of the DT770 or Grados. IMO the DT770's bass is really fun and cool, but too much to use as one's main cans, as it just gets annoying after a while. The A900 is more multi-purpose since it still has good bass slam, but does not let the bass overwhelm the rest of the sound. The A900 has a prominent midrange (almost too much so IMO), whereas the DT770 has a bit of a recessed midrange. I call the DT770 the rythm section phone, because guitars and vocals can get buried under the bass and drums/cymbals quite often. The DT770 grabs onto your head quite hard, whereas the A900 is like wearing nothing at all, however it is kinda loose, so the DT770 is easier to go portable with (even though the A900 looks better). These are some factors you might want to consider.
