Default Audio Technica M50s - What's next?

I've had my M50s for a couple months now and love em. I'm currently running straight from my computer's onboard sound. This summer I plan on upgrading my source and it got me thinking. What is a logical, significant upgrade to the M50s? I want closed, full-sized phones. I thought about the Denon D2000s, Beyer DT770s, and Ultrasone HFI 780s. I really like the sound signature of the M50s but just want more. My only criticism of them is maybe the mids are slighty recessed sounding. Not sure if it's the phone or my source or lack of amp. All suggestions welcome.

Try the ATH-A900Ti. I have it and think it's awesome.

Wow! Those look sweet. Kinda pricey but if that's my next step I'll start saving. Thanks

Did they get a U.S. distributor yet? They look ugly but if they sound good I would consider them.

It's hard to beat German technology and build quality when it comes to good headphones. One guys 48s were ran over by a car.. Suffered only cosmetic damage. Still worked...

That reminded me that my foot was rolled over by a car one time. Surprisingly though, I really didn't feel much pressure on the foot while the tire was rolling on my foot.

No pain, no bruise, nothing.

Well I don't plan on running over any heaphones I get. Build quality is very important to me but not in extreme like that
Can anyone else recommend a good upgrade?

I'll bet you never went through this kind of treatment when you were 7.
Right? Right?

Thread Revival,

I am willing to try open phones also. I have reading about the hd600. Can anyone compare that to the M50's? That's my only source of reference. Same thing for DT880's or 990's?

Thanks

If you're running your 'phones straight out of onboard sound card, I think those are not good options because they are hard to drive properly. Try ATH-AD900 maybe or save up for Ultrasone PRO900, both of which should sound just fine unamped out of your soundcard. PRO900s should be better and closer to M50 in sound, because they are closed. AD900 apparently has a very spacious soundstage and should have sweeter midrange and better treble than M50s, but they are open and will have less bass punch (although great bass quality).

Thanks Pianist,
I plan on upgrading my source before I buy more phones(unless the new Shures get great reviews when they come out). What's your take on the M50 vs the Q40?
