I owned the W1000 for about 2½ years, and i wan't to say that its definately more a reference phone than a portable phone.
I think its underestimated, i goes for under $400 and sounds extremely good. I personally think it sound better than HD650 and K701. The midrange and bass is something special in that phone, the bass sounds awesome on higher volume (not extreme levels though).
I did use them on the go but its not recommended. They are huge and is leaking a bit both in and out. On longer trips they're ok though.

The pads on the phone makes a weird dent in my hair - something you have to consider too when you're going out with the phone. I own the W1000 and HD650. After a while, i chucked the W1000 into my drawers. But that's just me.

Point well taken... But for me, headphones will be used in the privacy of my home.
