Arrg, my SA5000s are developing the infamous Y-connector problem
Title says it all. They're only four months old, so it's pretty annoying (typical Sony build quality, I guess).
Can anyone give me good instructions on how to repair it? I'm worried I might break something perminantly if I crack the cable open without knowing what I'm doing.
If someone has photo instructions I'd be in your dept. But even just advice from other people who have fixed their cable would be welcome.

I never had any problems with my SA5000 cord, what are you talking about! Is the cord coming loose at the Y split?

I'm not familiar with a y problem, but my cable did go bad on me in the right channel. Sucked because I was without them for a couple months.

The Y connection on the headphone lead is poorly designed and constructed, and comes loose on a lot of units. If you search here you can find quite a few people who have that problem.
Mine's still under warrantee, but it's needlessly time consuming and complex to send it on a return trip internationally to get fixed. Maybe I should use this as an excuse to upgrade to a W5000, but that's assuming I can find someone willing to buy something they're going to need to send straight off for repair...

I haven't had any problems with mine either even though I'm the third or fourth owner already. Still in mint condition every way.

You won't get a very good price selling a 'broken' unit.

Obviously I'm going to get less for it if I sell it. Just a matter of how much less.
Considering the amount of money I'm going to have to spend on air freight for it if I want it fixed, it may be just as cheap to sell it. We shall see.
I guess I'll start an interest check in the for sale forum and see what sort of offers I get.

If it comes loose, epoxy will fix it forever, and if you use Superglue standard epoxy it won't hurt the dialectric or the plastic, either.

I'm not sure how I'd get the connection secure. The Y-connector is covered in this plastic thing, so I'd have to remove that to epoxy it.

How difficult is it to open up the sonys and recable?

Not easy the way Sennheisers are, but its certainly doable for the budding DIYer.

Not easy the way Sennheisers are, but its certainly doable for the budding DIYer.

sennheisers are easy because they detach.
but if the headphones are easy to open up, maybe you can fix it yourself 
does the housing look easy to take apart? It cant be as bad as the AKGs. which make you take apart the entire headphone.

I certainly could fix it myself, it's just a matter of whether or not it's worth it. I really need some closed cans at the moment, so I'm taking it as more of an excuse to upgrade than anything.

No, not easy, although not impossible. I don't want to do it an risk break anything if I'm going to sell it, though.
