Default Am I the only one who bought MDR-E931?

Hi everyone!

Just asking, you know

Well, I wrote 3 posts (including pics!!) and no answer has come, just many views. So I'm curious whether somebody, no.. ANYBODY..! have them. I'm starting to think I'm the only one on Head-fi who has them and see no reason why. They are quite cheap and I think they are one of the better (if not the best) earbud on current market.

So, if you have them, tried them, please post some impressions of them.

Many thanx in advance.

Moonwalker-
I think you just might be. I think alot of people are scared of cheap Sony buds, as the ones in the past, aside from the 888's, generally sound pretty boomy and tinny.

How much do the 931's go for? How do they far against buds like the MX400 & MX500's in terms of bass, mids and highs, as well as driveability (especially unamped)?

I think you should do a review for everyone here who may be apprehensive about purchasing a pair.

Default Short impressions on Sony MDR-E931 earbuds

Hi!

Good idea, appar111! I'm going to post few notes, making short review.

The price is approx. 2x the price the MX-300 and above that of MX-500.

Both my MX400 and MDR-E931 are modded. But I'll speak of unmodded versions, how they sound.

Bass is a bit more pronounced on MX-x00. The bass on MDR-E931 is leaner, but to my ears, more precise and faster. The bass balance is better on MX-x00 definitely.

Mids are far nicer on 931. That's for sure. A bit more peaky, but much more detailed, albeit a bit cold and analytical. The mids on MX-x00 are just normal, boring on comparison with the Sonys. Sonys are more 'lively' IMHO.

The trebles on MX-x00 beyond 11000 Hz are so low in volume they are almost non-existent. That makes for poor definition and intelligibility in many songs. The 931, on the other hand, have more trebles, especially after modification I done to them. The entire balance is towards treble in the 931s as opposite to mid-sounding MX-x00. The sound is faster, more responsive than Senn buds.

There's trace of peakiness in hi-mids or low-highs, making the sound of 931 a bit metallic.

They are as easy to drive as Mx-400 and benefit as much from better amplification - more bass and nicer space around performers.

Nice day!

That's like a super-ultra-necrobump.

I don't like cheaper Sony IEMs.
