I don't know about the DT880's but I've witnessed the difference between newer and older version of HD650's myself. I guess you have also compared them? Otherwise you wouldn't write something like this.

Nobody ever said the filter cloth causes the difference in sound....
Just that there are two different sounding drivers that seem to destinguish themselves by the colour of the filter cloth.

haha sorry to derail - but this is news to me - I thought the general consensus was that the drivers are the same throughout old and new HD650's, but the different filters slightly changed the sound somehow...
Sennheiser has apparently said they'd changed the filter, but definitely not the driver.

x2. I like the K702 but there is just something about the k701 that does it for me. It just looks really clean and I like the contrasts of the brown leather headband and grey earpads against the white housing. It looks more expensive.

I wish AKG would focus on newer better headphones more than different colors. lol But I do understand from a business standpoint why they are doing what they are doing.

Now I'm really confused! I thought the DT880 Pros had different drivers with very different efficiencies. Is the question whether there is a difference controversial?
Back on track: I didn't like the K701s being white. I wouldn't think they'd wear well. The 702s look much nicer, for my tastes. I'd love to have a pair.

I still think the k701 is the best looking headphone!
I just love its white color!

DT880 Pro's would sound different since they clamp more. Try pressing your DT880's into your head. It changes the sound a lot.
IMO the K701's look nicer too. I don't have any other white headphones

that opening mixing and production quote is from AKG's release on it, too, i think
check drew's post about k702s over in the moon audio forum
nobody is going to know how the k702s comparek701s until at least one person has burned a pair of k702s in for 300+ hours - so, we're still a few weeks off (at best)

I love my 701's but I think I like the aesthetics on these better, going by the pictures I've seen so far. I just favor black in general, especially with anything electronics related.
Maybe we'd see some refinements and advancements in the tech used from the 701's but I'll be surprised if there are any major sound differences.
Refinement at best would be my best guess. They look like the same headphone for the most part except for the color and detachable cable.
Color me intruiged.
Aside: Isn't Sennheiser about due to put out a successor to the 650?

It's not black, but rather midnight blue.

Dang it, you're right. That's my very slight color blindness again.
I still like the way it looks a lot!

missing headphone stand
The Headroom website notes that the 701's come with a headphone stand but the 702's don't.
I don't own either, so I won't comment on the sound<g>.

Something tells me the 702s will have a darker sound signature.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Not that the K701 "stand" is anything to write home about.
