APureSound: The Ultimate Cable Manufacturer Introduces The V3 Headphone Cable

Yesterday I posted on the V3 re-cabled K701. Today is the V3 re-cabled HFI-780 which has well over the 120 hours of cable burn-in recommended by Alex. The HFI-780 has a total of 700 hours of burn in by me plus another 300 hours by the original owner and dw6928 whom I loaned the stock HFI-780 prior to Alex doing the 7 foot long V3 re-cable w/ the stock 1/4" plug.
Well I think many have written how much tighter and defined the bass becomes with the re-cable. Others have also written how the top end harshness and shrill goes away. What I have not seen posted is how much "sweeter" the mids become. Not only are the instruments easy to place but there is a level of detail, cohesiveness, clarity, and musicality that was not there before.
I was just listening to Mimi Fox's Perpetually Hip CD and the punch, detail, and articulation when she is playing her jazz guitar just blew me away. Did not expect a closed can with an MSRP of $250 and street price of $200 to sound this damn good. Thanks Alex!
Edit 1: Forgot to say that the V3 re-cabled HFI-780 sounds IMO much better and are more fun to listen to than the stock ATH-W1000 or ATH-W5000!
Thank you for posting your opinion and I am happy to hear you are enjoying your HFI-780's as much as the K701 and K501 that we recabled as well. All of these opinions help us keep improving our products.

Now, I'm thinking about balancing my Edition 9 - should I convert my APS recabled ones to a 4-pin xlr plus an adapter cable, or re-cable the stock ones, that is the question....
(don't have a balanced amp yet, I drive my HD600 out of the mini-DAC - so then I don't know whether to do female neutrik, or male & buy an amp)
Alex, your thoughts?
If you go 4pin XLR you do have a lot of flexibility with different adapters to use with what ever you want to use them with, but at the same time please remember you have an extra connection in the cable. This will not degrade the sound quality, but can make it harder to work with.
I would say as of now just hold out and save up for an amp and at that point send the 2nd pair of ED9's for a true balanced recable to fit right into the balanced amp. Send the HD650 cable in at the same time and I will swap your female XLR jacks for male XLR plugs free of charge.

This would mean that the 1/4" to balance adapter cable would be about 4 feet long. You may wish to discuss this at lenght with Alex to get his opinion.
You should be more scared of damaging the jack on the amp than our adapter cables. They are built solid!
Thanks,
Alex

I meant the 1/4" plug on the amp! Perhaps I should call it socket.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on the HeadRoom Balanced Desktop Amp without DAC, since my Apogee mini-DAC is a balanced source with XLR out. That will save me $400 on the internal DAC and $400 on the DPS. I have a pair of 12" Neutrik interconnects already, so I'm all ready to connect the amp to the DAC.
I also have a pair of Neutrik XLR male-male adapters to let me try the HR amp with my APS V3 balanced HD600 cable with female plug, that was previously made to plug into the mini-DAC (sold the Senn HD650, didn't like as much as 600's). If the HR amp is a big enough improvement in sound that I don't take advantage of the 30 day return period, then I'll be sending in an Edition 9 and HD600 cable to be modded to use with the amp.
SO ALEX, WHAT ABOUT THIS IDEA? I was thinking I might sell the stock Edition 9 to buy the amp, then send you the Edition 9 with the 6 foot APS and 1/8", and have you switch it to a 4-pin XLR. At the same time I'd buy a 6 foot long APS v3 adapter to connect the headphone's 4 pin XLR to the HR balanced desktop (a pair of 3 pin male XLR). I figure that's 2 extra connectors to pay for, but the cups don't have to be opened again.
Later (or sooner) I could get a second 4 foot adapter to take the small 4-pin XLR to a single ended plug. If I go with 1/8" I can use it with my small DAC/amps for laptop, and I still have my 4 foot APS V3 extension that will let me plug a 1/8" into one of my home SE amps.
What about that plan Alex?

Could you explain how the Apogee negates the need for the DPS? I don't follow.
This is OFF TOPIC, but I'll bite if we can try not to take over the thread. PM me with further questions unless Alex says it's okay.
The HR balanced desktop comes with the Astrodyne switching power supply ($99 option for micros), but if you get the internal DAC for the HR amp you need the $399 Desktop Power Supply due to the increased power demands to run both amp and DAC in the same case. The Apogee mini-DAC is a balanced DAC with two balanced XLR outs, so they can feed the HR amp via the HR balanced XLR inputs. This means I don't need the internal DAC upgrade in the HR amp, which means I don't need the power supply upgrade either, unless I want the very slight sonic improvements. Reviews have shown the Astrodyne switching PSU is very good.

If Alex doesn't post a picture, I will try but my photography skills aren't equal to Alex's I can tell you. I am still back on that 2 megapixal camera.

I promise to take some really nice pictures for you.
