For the last week or so I have been listening to the re-cabled K701 and HFI-780. The level of detail and clarity has been raised to a new level. The bass that was not there in the K701 is now in full force, on the HFI-780 it is tight and punchy w/ no flab.
The highs on the K701 are just superb, but the real difference is with the HFI-780, gone is any harshness or shrillness.

Thanks for the great sound.
I am happy to hear you are enjoying your headphones.
Balanced AKG K701 using Furutech FP701M plugs and black sleeving. This will be yet another very happy K701 owner.

Yesterday I posted on the V3 re-cabled K701. Today is the V3 re-cabled HFI-780 which has well over the 120 hours of cable burn-in recommended by Alex. The HFI-780 has a total of 700 hours of burn in by me plus another 300 hours by the original owner and dw6928 whom I loaned the stock HFI-780 prior to Alex doing the 7 foot long V3 re-cable w/ the stock 1/4" plug.
Well I think many have written how much tighter and defined the bass becomes with the re-cable. Others have also written how the top end harshness and shrill goes away. What I have not seen posted is how much "sweeter" the mids become. Not only are the instruments easy to place but there is a level of detail, cohesiveness, clarity, and musicality that was not there before.
I was just listening to Mimi Fox's Perpetually Hip CD and the punch, detail, and articulation when she is playing her jazz guitar just blew me away. Did not expect a closed can with an MSRP of $250 and street price of $200 to sound this damn good. Thanks Alex!
Edit 1: Forgot to say that the V3 re-cabled HFI-780 sounds IMO much better and are more fun to listen to than the stock ATH-W1000 or ATH-W5000!

Good review. I have addressed the mids improvements as being 'richer' with a re-cable. If real dairy creme is rich and sweet, then we agree on the mids.
Now, I'm thinking about balancing my Edition 9 - should I convert my APS recabled ones to a 4-pin xlr plus an adapter cable, or re-cable the stock ones, that is the question....
(don't have a balanced amp yet, I drive my HD600 out of the mini-DAC - so then I don't know whether to do female neutrik, or male & buy an amp)
Alex, your thoughts?

Larry, if I may I would wait until you have a balanced amp/source before spending money in a balance re-cable. I wil also suggest that the balance to single ended be long enough so the xlrs to which you would plug your cans to make it to the floor, otherwise you will put a lot of strain on the 1/4" plug.
This would mean that the 1/4" to balance adapter cable would be about 4 feet long. You may wish to discuss this at lenght with Alex to get his opinion.
