Record storage/cabinet?
I figure this is the most likely area to hit up some folks who might have ideas/solutions - I have a moderate collection of records that I need to store. I don't want to use crates or the like, my preference would be a small cabinet or similar - I have cats and they like to scratch crates and the exposed records When I was younger and records were still popular I remember lots of stereo cabinets had special sections for records with slim dividers and such. Anyone make something like that still?
Thanks!

Todd sells some pretty nice ones here:

I know, I know, they're technically "crates", but they don't really act like it. There's an image floating around Head-Fi of these filled with records. They act just like shelves!
And yes, these are stackable. Give Todd a call.

Per Madsen Design Rackit system- Very elegant OAK units that store all formats. Stackable. EXPENSIVE. Highly versatile. You get what you pay for! I use them for LP's, CD's and Cassettes. Fits into our living room with OAK floors.

I've got four of the 4x4 Ikea Expedit bookcases lining a wall in my place. Work very well and are amazingly cheap for thier consruction. I have around 8k records in them with plenty of room for expansion. No sign of warping etc. which is better than I expected for 99 dollars. They make some smaller ones as well.

I recently bought one of the smaller Expedit bookcases. I wanted a bigger one, but none of the open portions of walls in my apartment were wide enough, and I wasn't about to go move everything around. It was easy to build and pretty deccent construction for what you pay, as stated above. I plan on getting another one as my vinyl collection gets larger.

I, too, am planning on purchasing one. However, space is at a premium. Can anyone tell me approximately how many LP's the bookcase is capable of holding? I'm hoping the 2 X 4 one will hold 1,000.

JMT,
I hate you, or almost. Very few things am I jealous of in life but those SOB who have more vinyl than me are one. I have around 900/950 LPs'.
The problem with your record storage is that your head needs to be at right angles, which it is'nt.
I intend to build shelving like that in record shops, where the albums face you - square on and at a height that does'nt do your back in.

JMT,
I know your system of storage is excellant for the LPs themselves, in fact in that sense I don't think it can be beaten but there is this problem of being able to peruse one's LPs in comfort.
Also there is the question of age. With the kind of lifestyles that many now live in the west, many will not be in any kind of condition to crouch down with their head at an angle when they get old. In fact some not so old are in really bad shape and will probably do nothing about it, so the problem for them is now!
I can't see any way but the record shop way as a solution to comfortable trawling of a record collection, with the nec. dividers to keep the records nearly vertical but giving one the chance to see what one is handling.
Please someone give me a viable comfortable alternative.

I put my box sets on the bottom shelves since you don't have to get so close up to them to read the spines.

I have a record cabinet that was constructed from a broken console TV, but only holds 100. I am planning on buying two 2x4 Expedits in the near future.

I have 16 of Todd's stackable record "crates" and really like them. They protect the records well and interlock when stacked. I recently moved from Hawaii to Maryland and my record collection came through entiely unscathed when moved within Todd's crates. Highly recommended.
