I just got my Def Tech ProSub 100tl in the mail and have been playing with it all morning. Wow. I'm really stunned at what this thing can do. Ok, anyway on to my question:
Stuffed into the rear port (slot-type port on the bottom) was a 12x8 board covered in velvet with metal "spikes"sticking out of it at regular intervals, and a prop bar in the back to stand it upright (think picture frame on your desk).
It was in a plastic bag and the only reason why I noticed was because this bag went crazy when I played the first notes through the sub.
This might be naive, but could it be some sort of absorber/deflector for the sub? Or do you think it is just something that got stuffed into on accident? (might possibly explain why the seller wanted to get rid of it on Ebay...)
Anyway, I won't be embarrassed if it has nothing whatsoever to do with the sub, but I gotta know. I can't imagine what possible purpose this thing could have elsewhere.
P.S. I fits in the slot perfectly. I'll try to post a pic later unless someone tells me what it is first.
No, it's definitely not a stand. Picture a piece of cardboard about the size of a piece of paper covered in Velvet with little metal spikes sticking out of it. Really, they are not spikes but tine 1/4" metal spines that are easily bendable. On the back is something identical to the back of a picture frame that allows it to stand up at an angle. I'll try to to a pic to help things out.
I have a 200 tl (the 12" version) which I use in my bathroom. Mine was bought new and there was nothing included with it like what you describe.
It could be a stand like was mentioned or maybe used to partially close off the port. I have my port stuffed completely. It limits the maximum output but tightens the bass a bit. When used for my HT room I did not close the port.
I did take a 100 tl home to audition but decided to spend a little more for extra measure even though the 100 tl did fine in my 14' x 22' room.
Ok, I've been looking at this thing and have come to the realization it most likely has nothing to do with the subwoofer. It looks like it might be a display for earrings or something along those lines. The little metal things appear to be tiny clips.
How it made it's way (and why) into my sub I'll never know. Thanks for your patience all!
P.S. I'll try it out back there anyway - might be good for port noise (should there ever be any)

That's pretty funny. My mind also went straight to something like a stand, due to the spikes, but indeed this is definitely a display of some sort. eBay is fun.

Somebody's kids was having fun.
Flash Back- years ago (1975) I worked on an 8 track deck that was brought in non-functional. It was full of M&M's. Kids love to poke stuff into things.
