Default Using an EQ...how to hook it up

I've got an opportunity to get an older ADC 10-band EQ for cheap. I know purists out there poo-poo EQ's in favor of an unadulterated signal, but my first experiences with audiophile audio where with an EQ'd system. I remember pushing the defeat button only to be stunned at the difference in sound.

As a musician, I am very much interested in the nuance of music and often wish I could hear certain instruments more clearly (like the Violas), and EQ really helps with that. (I'm a violist myself, so I am also very biased towards them!)

Ok, now that I've explained myself, I need to know how to hook it up. On my older receiver, I had a Tape Monitor button that allowed me to run all my sources through the receiver, looped through the EQ, and then to my ears. All I had to do was make sure the Tape Monitor button was engaged and then use my receiver as normal. I didn't have to press any other buttons on the EQ itself.

My new receiver (old actually, but new to me) doesn't appear to have a Tape Monitor function. As you may have read in my other thread regarding amp's, I intend on using it as a preamp and hooking up to Marantz MA500 monoblock amps to drive my speakers.

Do I hook up the eq to the Pre Out terminals and then hook the amps to the eq? Please let me know if this sounds ok to you.

Your described method should work fine. How old is the ADC EQ? My brother had an ADC EQ which he bought in the early 80's. I tried it out a couple years ago and it sounded like crap...I ended up trashing it. You can by a brand new dbx 31-band EQ for $200 or $150 for a 15-band.

I think it's about the same age as the one you mention. It is model SS-100SL Sound Shaper. I can get it for $30. Do you think it's worth it? I already have an Optimus 10-band eq that is about 10 years old, but it has ground-loop issues.

Do you think the ADC will be better than that at least? Supposedly they have a good rep, but I've never actually heard one.

Based on what I heard I wouldn't go for it although I have no idea what model number I was using.

I can only suggest looking for a newer used EQ.

If you have any interest in buying new I highly recommend Sweetwater
