Default Soundcard for Klipsch 2.1 speakers

I'm doing some research for a friend who recently bought some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 computer speakers (they also say THX on them, but from what I've read about THX, I'm not sure how that applies to the speakers).

Anyway, he wants to take full advantage or at least more advantage of the sound quality of these speakers by upgrading his soundcard. I haven't looked into soundcards much, but I saw the M-Audio 2496 recommended as a good value, although I'm wondering if maybe that's overkill for these speakers, and a cheaper sound card would deliver just as good of results.

The ideal sound card would be around $50 and help to control the subwoofer so it doesn't have that out of control bloated sound too many car sound systems have.

Thank you.

Klipsch 2.1 owner for the last 5yrs..

Sound card will be secondary in the upgrading.. for me, some non-mobo card will do nicely.

most important, drop the stock cables.. get new ones =)

Cheers

Thanks for the reply...only, what is a non-mobo sound card? I'm just starting to look into sound cards and don't know much yet.

Also, which cables do you use and/or recommend?

Thanks
