I'm greatly intrigued by the apparent value to be had from speaker makers that operate without the mark ups of distributers and dealers. And even offer their speakers in kit form for even greater savings. Ribbon tweeters seem to be the thing these days, options of different drivers are available and sometimes the speakers are even upgradable which is definitely cool.

VMPS Audio is one such company.

And I recently read a very good review at Positive-Feedback of a $850 pair of Selah Audio speakers. "I had to constantly remind myself that I was listening to an $850 pair of speakers, as their treble is better than any monitors I have ever heard, and their midrange is better than most monitors costing up to $2500." $460 per pair in kit form.

selah audio SA-1 review

It seems like a buyers market for speakers and I sort of wish I was in the market as I'd love to hear some of these.

Two pairs of SA-1 are going around the US on an audition tour. You can hop onto audiocircle to get on the list, I think.

i personally liked the JM Labs Chorus 707 S:
http://www.focal.tm.fr/gb/home/chorusS/c707s.htm
and the JM Labs Cobalt 806 S:
http://www.focal.tm.fr/gb/home/cobaltS/c806s.htm

and from B&W
the 705:
http://www.bwspeakers.com/index.cfm/...el/MODEL%20705

i personally have the 705 S from JM Labs and i love them, the 707 S were out of my price range but they are definately great speakers.
if i had a grand to spend on a pair of speakers though, those B&W would be it.

I'd check out the Paradigm Studio Reference series of speakers, specifically the Studio 40 v3.

The responses so far seem to be pretty good, I'll keep them all in mind.

However, I found this local seller who has a pair of ProAc Tablette 2000 for $600. Any of you guys have any experience with ProAc or this model in particular?

Are you into diy at all? The ProAc 2.0 clone can be built for around $600 on the cheap side. The sound quality is at least in the ballpark of the original's sound and there are tons of tweaks that are well documented that can adjust the sound to your taste. I think they say proac has a pretty bold "technicolor" sound, though.

All I have to say is if you do some haggling, you could get a pair of Klipsch RB-75's from Good Guys. I am a big fan of Klipsch bookshelves, as you can obviously tell from my sig I ask you to at least audition them if you can, you will not be disappointed.

Tablettes have been around in various updated versions for 20 years. The general consensus is they graduated, over those 20 years, from being terrible to being amazing. I assume the '2000's are a newer version as in year 2000?
If so they should be pretty good. The most recent review of the most recent Tablettes was in TAS last year and they loved them.

I found an older review which is still good.

Sound Quality
"Presented twice to the listening panel, the reactions were
impressively consistent, but not entirely complimentary. This is a speaker that leads with its midband, which is very neutral and attractively open - but also a bit thin and 'shiny' with it. On some tracks this was quite welcome, but others could sound a little edgy and uncomfortable.

The bass packs a goodly thump, but wasn't entirely convincing in either dynamic contrast or punch, and didn't really convey thedirection the music was heading. The midband has some of the classic neutrality of the BBC monitoring tradition, though dynamic expression seemed a little muted. And although the top end is clean and clear, it somehow needs to be balanced by a little more warmth lower down.

Conclusion
This is a beautiful little loudspeaker, with its clean-cut lines and fabulous veneerwork. The open and relatively bright balance is a quite strong characteristic which could be a blessing or a curse depending on the rest of the system. It wasn't, in truth, an ideal match for our test conditions, but under the right circumstances could be a tempting prospect."

Check the ProAc site for reviews?

As I'm busy with school and all, I don't think I have the time for DIY.

genetic, how does the Quad 12L compared to the Totem Model 1? In what areas did you like one over the other?

eyeteeth, thanks for the link and review. I'm also interested if anyone here actually heard any of the Proacs.
