I owned a Sherwood reciever - it ran hot and did not sound very good.
Older stereo recievers - especially the Marantz - were known for a sort of "warm" sound, in some ways similar to that of a tube amp. The best of the breed was the Sansui AU series.
If you aren't interested in warm sound, you could always try a used Yamaha receiver. They're generally spectacularly reliable, and if you get one with discrete output transistors, they sound good, too.
Sorry about the confusion but I've already purchased both items - the speakers are KEF iQ5 and the amp is Pioneer Elite SX-A9-J (identical to the UK version, A-A9-J). Now I'm looking for a good way to connect them.
About banana plugs - how does one attach them to the cable? Is it easy enough to be done by a beginner? Looking at the terminals of both the speakers and the amp, do you think they need banana plugs or will bare wire do?

Bare wire normally would be fine. Here's the problem:
If your speakers have wire jumpers like those, you may have trouble fitting bare wire into the binding posts from a vertical angle. I can't see from that photo whether or not the jumpers use spade connectors, but if they do, they'll probably leave enough room for bare wire.
Banana plugs are fairly easy to use, but they do add another mechanical connection (which is bad in a purist sense). Try bare wire, and if it doesn't work, go banana. Those red and black pieces in the centers of the binding posts should pop out.
