The Story:
I was up at RS with a friend to get some last-minute parts for a circuit I was building when I saw that they had a dual op-amp. For the price I said "WTH, I'll give it a shot." I bought it, brought it home, and then the magic happened.
The Review:
A. The Build-Quality
The letters were a bit hard to read even with a magnifying glass, but other than that, it's a DIP-8 chip... need I say more?
B. The Sound
I popped it in my CMoy and was pleasantly surprised. The op-amp was actually pretty decent. The lows were defined by a slight tubbiness, but it was by no means muddy or muffled, and the highs were sweet and responsive(even with its relatively low gain bandwidth) yet not sibilant at all. The mids were slightly recessed, but still apparent and overall the op-amp had unique sound that seemed "right," if you know what I mean. I've actually grown to like this chip better than my Burr-Brown OPA2134.
Conclusion:
The TL082 series is by no means the best, but it still sounds damn good and deserves respect. Don't let the price($2 + tax) or where it's sold deter you, this chip is worth every cent.
I give this op-amp a 7 out of 10.

TL072 (preferred for audio) and TL082 are good ol' classic op-amps, and like all the vintage - don't like low impedance loads and low supply voltages. Two 9V batteries are more than enough, though to drive the chip properly, and yes, it sounds surely better than the OPA2134.

Just curious, are all of the TL0xx models vintage? What about NExxxx?
i don't think that's what majkel means, i think he/she means that they are classic op-amps that are still produced. for example, if you were to buy an lp that was printed a few days ago but originally recorded a few decades ago, would that be "vintage" or "classic?"
i'm actually asking, because i don't know the answer

Ah, I was using "vintage" as a synonym for "old." Not necessarily old parts, just old designs.

Yepp, it's an old design but still produced with good (TI) and poor (ST) results. TI was the inventor of the chip so they know how to do it. For a Cmoy a heavily recommend TLE2082, it's a newer op-amp, direct replacement for the TL07x and TL08x series, working with much lower voltages and better tolerating low impedances. Sonically I preferred the TLE2082 over the AD8620 in my Cmoy.

my cmoy is 18v, and there's no clipping or oscillation, so i don't believe i'll be changing anytime soon
