Default Mini jack Y cable

I am using a mini-jack Y cable (female to 2 male) to hook a single set of PC speakers to 2 sources. I don't have a need to use them simultaneously, but don't want to crawl behind my desk to unplug stuff when I want to swtch.

When I have both sources plugged in, the sound level is roughly 50% of when I unplug one of them from the cable.

Is this normal or is something screwed up? Is this the right tool for the job?

One source is my PC. The other source is an Xbox 360 with an RCA->Mini Jack.
