Default Low level listening, budget, pc speakers.

I started a new job last week that does not really allow me to do the 8 hours of straight headphone time like my old one did. Getting up and down from my desk all day, and having to keep an active ear for corporate types is not conducive to being strapped down

So I need some recommendations on a low volume, mid-fi set of small PC speakers. My budget is around $50 at the max.

Max volume on these will be VERY low, so I don't really know if I am asking an impossible question here. I will mostly be listening to classical, opera, and slower IDM (some Aphex Twin, Autechre, etc.), so i would like to keep full sound definition. I know most small PC speakers lose all bass when the volume is very low.

Powered and unpowered are both fine. I mostly likely will not run a dac, but running a small amp (possibly T amp) is an option.

FMS-16F

Honestly, I have yet to hear a better multimedia media speaker kit, and at ~$50 can't go wrong.. God bless China.

DEFINITELY the Logitech X-230. It sound AWESOME for its size, at any price, and way better than what you'd expect from logitech Newegg.com - Logitech X-230 32 watts RMS 2.1 Black Speaker System - OEM

Most absolutely, I use to bring in Klipsch Promedia Ultras to sell the FMS.

I don't recall anyone choosing the Logitechs over the FMS after auditioning.

wow sounds like I need to check those out then. Funny how some of that generic branded stuff can blow you away every now and then

does anyone know how these compare to m-audio's cheap powered monitors?

I tend to prefer a neutral to warm sound signature...

Audioengine A2 Desktop Speakers

AudioEngine A2, $199. Stereophile did a VERY favorable review on these nearfield monitors, they have VERY linear response.

If you can stretch your budget a little, definitely consider the A2. Plus the A2 are active monitors, sparing you the expensive of getting an outboard amp.
