Not necessarily. I think it means that there are lots of ways to spend one's money in this hobby. If the LOD sounds good to you and you're happy with it, then great. But I think it's important to dispel the notion that one must spend north of $150 to get a better than decent LOD.

That's interesting. Why is it not a true line out?

It's not the true lineout. Only like the headphone out,you can still adjust the volume by its remote.

$25 is the sweet spot for LODs. Anything more then that is just a waste of money as you could be spending that on better headphones like others said. Those are infinitely better then LODs or interconnects. You aint done upgradeing headphones unless you have the UE11, PK1, W3/SE530 and a pair of Stax headphones. Better save up
I am a non believer when it comes to interconnects. I have a high end one myself and I just cant hear the difference between it and one of those cheap 3.5mm interconnects wich I have dozens of those lying around the house. So... take it for what you will but I you want to warn you for any potential disappointments.

The one I have, that came with my 4G, is a true line out and sounds good.
Just because you can adjust the volume doesn't mean it's not a line out. There could be a pot in the dock, making it a very basic preamp. If the volume adjustment of the iPod doesn't effect the volume off the output via the dock, it's a true line out.
One problem I have with my current iPod, 160GB, is that if I supply power through the dock, the line out picks up noise from the drive spinning. It's very annoying and means I can't charge and listen at the same time.

If that's the case, then one of the earlier generation docks does the trick, as noted above. Or one of the Sendstation products.

probably yes!
Even using the most expensive audio wire at 20$ per foot that total price for a lod would be something like 30$(20$ for 1 foot of wire, making a 4" LOD, ipod connector and mini jack another 6$, 4$ for solder, techflex, heatshrink and shipping expenses) doesn't justify asking 150$ for a cable of this kind! selling it for 150$ is a 500% margin!!!!!
And also if you are looking for a flexible durable cable you shouldn't buy one that uses enormous wire gauges! For lod's I would never use something like 18 or 20AWG. 24-26 is appropriate! The strain that "garden hose" cables put on the amplifier and ipod jacks is too much!

Love this forum. Where else are people who don't know you willing to tell you what is exactly right for you. Wish I read this thread yesterday. I just spent $35 on an LOD, and therefore wasted $10 that I could have put towards saving towards a UE11, PK1, W3/SE530 and a pair of Stax headphones. I don't want any of these, but now I know I need them and that my value system/preferences are out of whack.

Would you spend $150 on an LOD?

I "downsized" from an ALO dock to a Turbodock and am very happy, and feel less like a chump. PM Turbo. He rocks.

Probably not. But I recognize that other people might have different preferences, and I would not presume to tell someone else that if they spend more than $X on an LOD that they have wasted their money. It's one thing to offer opinions as to improvements (or the lack thereof) in SQ from spending more money, or to offer suggestions as to where the point of diminishing returns might be, but I think it's a bit presumptuous to stay categorically what is right for someone we don't know, or to suggest that nobody could possibly have a reason for wanting to spend $150 on an LOD.

I understand and agree with your main point; it is not for us to tell others how little to spend. But the converse is equally true--and unfortunately becoming more prevalent here at Head-Fi--namely, that one MUST spend at least $(insert high amount here) on an LOD in order to get acceptable sound from an iPod. I think that's a myth worth debunking.
