line noise
I just bought a Niles AXP-1 input selector so I could run multiple sources into my headphone amp. Everything seems to work pretty well except for the fact that when I tried to plug in my soundcard, I get lots of noise. What I'm trying to figure out is what is causing the noise. Could it be the cheap interconnect that I bought? or is it more likely the soundcard? I actually tried both the Audigy and the AudioTrak Opto play and they both create a lot of noise when plugged into the selector (no matter which input I have selected there is still noise in the line, if I unplug either the RCA's from the selector or the minijack from the soundcard the noise is gone). When I use the AudioTrak straight into headphones I don't have any noise issues just dead silence so I'm not sure what the deal is... Does anyone know enough about this sort of thing to tell me for sure?

I found that upgrading from a cheap mini-rca or even a mini-rca adapter with freebie cables to radioshack golds reduced line noise signifigantly. The only problem I have with the radioshacks is that the RCA connectors are undersized, making for a really difficult fit on all my equipment.

Jasper: What kind of noise? White/pink noise or more a low frequency hum?

Jasper: Sounds like a grounding issue. Do you have an antenna connected somewhere in the system? If yes, try removing it. If the hum goes away, your problem can be solved with the usual antenna ground breaker filter...

nope, I have an antena hooked to my receiver but it's grounded and the only connection to the receiver is optical anyway so it wouldn't matter.

well I picked up a Monster Standard cable and it reduced the line noise a lot but it's not gone... maybe I'll go get the next step up... or a different cable all together...
-EDIT-
Anybody know how the higher end Radioshack stuff compares to Monster Standard as far as noise?

I just picked up a few pairs of Radio Shack Fusion A/V ICs today, and while I haven't listened much with them, they already sound slightly better than my old Monsters (better in my view being more neutral). Build quality is also very good for the cost: .999 O2-free copper, gold-plated connectors, etc.

if you're running a windows system and dont listen to cds or midi at all or a lot, go into the mixer/volume control in the right hand side of the taskbar and mute everything but the main and the wave/directsound sliders. I find that you often get noise from the others if they're not muted; particularly the cd in.

With the AudioTrak Opto Play there's only the basics anyway so that's not the issue... the noise level is fairly low but it's still present...

You may also want to look at shielded cables. I thought I had a ground loop problem once -- switching to shielded cables cured it entirely.
