klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 vs ProMedia GMX D-5.1

do you guys know the differences between these two sets of PC speakers?

I am considering these two speakers for for music and movies

Well, there are several differences that I can see just from the mfg's website:

-The promedia weighs more. This usually (and I mean usually, there are several exceptions) the heavier a speaker is, the better it is when it comes to speakers like these

-The promedia has a good deal more wattage. This may or may not be a concern for you.

-The promedia's satellites are sealed, which will probably yield better results with the higher output. This is conjecture by me but I have a fair amount of confidence in it.

-Just looking at the speakers the promedia look less like gimmicks and more like full-fledged speakers. They both have MDF enclosures, however.

I honestly think the promedia will offer noticeably better sound. Whether or not in a PC application this will be pertinent will vary extremely.

The promedias have been discontinued, but it has been known to have some phenomenal sound quality (well, for its price) and tendency for breaking down.

good luck getting them if you are in the uk, i struggled for years to import a set, there were issues with the power/transformer damaging the speakers even with a world adaptor being used, that what one of the official importers told me.

so a fair few uk users using adapters, would suffer the dreaded pop sometime down the line, and sending that kit back to klipsch.....pfttt at your cost. forget about it.

shame, as they are a fantastic set of PC speakers.

I have just bought myself the standard promedia 2.1s. From your list, i have to say that there is not question as to which is better -> i would DEFINATELY go for the Ultra version! I too was wondering which 1s i should go for between the GMXs and the Ultra (or the standard in my case). For the 2.1s, the GMXs=90W RMS and the "ultra"=200W RMS. Naturally, i had to invest my money on the ultra edition.


Conclusion: Buy the ultra edition!

Remember: do remember that you will need to buy a voltage converter in order to use in the UK (this will set you back another £40-£70).

If you can find the Ultras, get them! I've had mine for 3 years and they are incredible! Also, Klipsch used to sell an accessory called the Promedia DD-5.1 which is a cool box specifically made for the Ultra 5.1 setup. You hook the digital out from your sound card to this DD box, then it has the hookups that go to the Ultra 5.1 sub-woofer/amp. It has both optical and coaxial digital inputs, plus two more stereo L+R analog hookups. The DD box has a remote, so you can switch between sources and play any of them over the Ultra 5.1's. Those dual woofers really rock. Klipsch makes some of the best stuff!!! (or at least did)

Yeah the DD-5.1 or you can get the Creative DDTS-100. Both are discontinued though so they go for >$300 on eBay. I didn't want to spend that much so I just bought a receiver to output the Ultras in DPII/DTS:Neo.

the promedia ultra 5.1's are fabulous, they give the gmx's a thorough thrashing. that said, as has been already pointed out, an inordinate number of promedia ultra sets had amps that died, with some owners going through 4 different sets rma'd one after the other with klipsch. the problem can be fixed though, my set died on me, so instead of rma'ing with klipsch to get another potential dud, I mailed the promedias amp and control pod to elliot-tronics (klipsch forums and ebay) and he revived them, installed upgraded components, and I no longer have that shadow of worry that they won't turn on tomorrow.
