Default Help! HD580 Recable?!

Wow, so I got my HD580s today...great soundstage! I can finally listen to opera without feeling like I am being shouted at!

BUT......I also finally discovered the famous Sennheiser veil...instruments are clear, everything is clear, but somehow a bit dulled at the same time. It's like I am sitting behind a stage curtain or something.

My Pimeta cleaned up a bit, but still lacks a certain lustre....

I understand that recabling is supposed to help.... does it? Is it worth it for HD580s (I am not planning to upgrade these. I can't find a compelling argument, unless it's for the HD650s, which I am not really interested in right now...)? And if so, what should I do?

I've PM'ed RnB180 about his senn mod cable, but what else can I look at?

Help!!!

I am very much in the same situation. I'm running 580s out of an AV-710 and a Pimeta. I wonder if it is worth the money, buying an upgraded cable.

I think you should upgrade source first. Headphones, source, and amplifier are first priority

What he said. Cables SHOULD be the last thing you do. That's not alway's the case but in an ideal world you should: (IMO)
1. Find the headphones that you like
2. Find a source that is in the same league as your phones (if ya know what I mean)
3. Get an amp that tweaks the sound signiture which ever way you want.
4. Now you can start looking at cables to tweak it that tiny last bit.

If I got to start over, that's how I'd do it.

I 100% agree with that.

Source: I currently use my ipod, which I know is not the greatest, even with 320kbps rips, but as I have a habit of wondering and travelling for work, I can't really enjoy a home set up...(although I have seen a nice demo'ed Nakamichi mini system that I would like to get) So how do I improve my source quality without sacrificing portability?

Amp: My PIMETA is great for portability, and I am looking at upgrading to a Portaphile or Zemo Lambda for that, and probably a M^3 or the Gilmore lite for home... Am I looking at the right amps?

Headphones: HD280, ER6i, HD580, K501, MS1, soon a DT880...because I like a huge variety of music....and details....

The reason that I was looking at cables was that I noticed that they made a difference when I wired up my home theater and though using the Canare Starquad IC sounds a lot better then using my iriver stock line out... and...well, the HD580 cables looks...so...um, wimpy?!

iPod isn't so bad, especially if you are using its line-out.

As for amp recommendation, I think its a better deal for you to just buy a single amp for portable and home use, instead of dividing the funds between a home amp and a portable one.

Along those lines, why not sell some phones and go higher up on the modes that you really like For example, HD580->HD650 or MS1->RS1 or ER6i->ER4/E4C

Some say the stock HD650 cable is a pretty good step up from the stock HD580 cable. I haven't compared them but for $15 it might be worth it.
I also agree with the way to set up a system. Source is a huge part of it, often overlooked.

What difference is there between HD600 stock cable and HD650's? I checked the australian price of these two and the former costs much more.

the hd650 cable has thicker awg conductors and larger connectors.

the hd580 has TINY conductors and wimpy connectors.

Thanks! I assume the HD650 cable will fit the HD580 just fine? Also, any guess as to why the HD600 should cost much more?
