Default DIY: First Time with cables. Crazy?

Ok,

I think that I am going to invest in some parts to make a few cables that I want/ need.

I am going to buy:
- 5M/10M of Silver encased in Teflon (havent decided how much)
- 4 RCA plugs
- White Heat shrink (need also for depodding im716)
- WBT Silver Solder
- Disasemble cheapie iPod breakout cable for the dock connector.
- Mini Stereo plug

What I want to try and make my own set of silver RCA cables and a very small LOD for my iPod Touch that is very short.

I am thinking that I might be able to get away with 5M because I only need the RCA cables to be 3 feet and that extra cable could be used for the LOD since I want the cable portion to only be about 1.5/2 inches.
Right now, the RCA plugs I am looking at can use compression or solder... which is better?

Is this a good idea? I would be investing ~$40 (after some very careful shopping).

Or should I just get a pre-made set of silver RCA cables for $25 off ebay?

Would this be worth the trial and potential error?

Thanks for responding!

*BTW: I have done soldering for class (CompEng.) and basic Cmoy's*

If you want experience making cables, I'd recommend doing what you're planning.

If you really don't want to put effort into it, then buy cheaper cables off ebay.

Nice idea, I would recommend braiding them, I love the Kimber sound and they are braided. No doubt you'll end up with a fine cable.

I'd say, it'll be worth the DIY perspective and you will learn a lot from the trial / error for sure!

one thing... silver encased in teflon, depending on how thick and much... will possibly restrict you from "bending" it nicely (a U shape) for an LOD, the shorter it is, the worse the bend becomes (or harder)

Well, since this is a learning experience - I think I want to use a mil-spec 20 guage silver coated OFC cable in a much longer length.

You should definitely go the DIY route if you're willing to make the investment. At the very least, once you get some soldering experience, you can outfit your system with cables you've made yourself, and possibly upgrade some of your gear. The problem is that all those boutique wires, solders, connectors etc. often end up costing quite a pretty penny, so I wouldn't really consider it a $ saving proposition, but you have a lot more control over the final product. It's always reassuring to know that your cable has perfect joints, good strain relief, and high quality components, rather than purchasing it from some random person, hoping they took the time and care that you would have.

Anyway, good luck, and hit us up on the DIY forum if you run into any hurdles.
