This kinda explains why my cables get burnt out when I use them too much; they get tired. Who can blame them?

I always keep my audio system turned on playing low level music. I find this sufficient to keep the "burn in" sound. Otherwise, the sound is very congested, and the singer's voices sound a bit delayed, and it looses all the PRAT. I use my iPod for this purpose since I don't want to keep my computer on or my CD player running 24/7. I also find the iPod's additional distortion over my other sources tends to flush out the clogged sound better.

I find that running white noise the night before is necessary to keep my cables burned in, if I'm going to do some critical listening the next day. If I don't do that, they sound takes a few minutes to warm up, otherwise it sounds cold and sterile for the first 5-10 minutes. I also massage the cables with my hands a bit before I turn on my system, to stretch the strands and I find that the sound is more spatious and is less subject to overburn. Overburn happens when the cable is overused, and you need to let it recover for a few days. I find rubbing an icepack on them for a few minutes each day restores the condition

Yeah, I totally agree. I got this blender, and when I first used it, it sounded super loud and vibrated this way and that. After a few weeks of making smoothies, it toned down and had a nice purr to it - also, the vibration came into balance. Funny thing is, after returning from a trip, I found it to have it's original unbroken-in characteristic harsh/loud vibration. It had to be rebroken-in. Dude.

I have experimented with leaving the system burning in at all volumes between 40-60dB and each dB step gave a different sound signature. But I found out that the louder burn-in volume gave more fullness, warmth and low-level detail. So now I always leave the music playing at the same volume I listen to.

I also put a thick blanket on top of my headphones to keep them warmer, I haven't heard a significant difference from the blanket but it helps me sleep at night because I sleep next to my audio system.

I haven't made much experiments with this but I noticed that if I bend my Genesis cables I need to burn them in again for 2-3 weeks.

In a cold room I heard more detail from the cables but less detail from the headphones. This combination gives a fake black background because there is more whiteness from colder cables and more edginess from colder headphone diaphragms. The winter has a lot of transparency/edginess/thinness and the summer has a lot of low-level detail/smoothness/fullness.

Singing to cables doesn't work. I've tried. Singing to my iPod, however really loosened up the highs and gave the sound a more expansive soundstage.

(This thread is proof of my signature. )
