Default 2.1 Speaker Setup for PC ~$400

Greetings Head-Fi'ers,

Right now I have a set of Logitech Z-5300e 5.1 speakers hooked up to my PC (shameful, I know.) I'm looking to significantly upgrade the audio quality of my desktop setup, these wimpy little speakers just don't cut it any more. Everything is muddled, the sub is just one big boomy mess.

My source is a Razer AC-1 soundcard. Not the greatest, but it does admirably for what I need. It has optical out as well as your standard 3.5mm outputs. My listening is probably 75% music and 25% games. I'm not looking for any sort of surround in this setup as I will probably use headphones for the majority of my gaming. I listen to a huge variety of music, but mainly alternative and classic rock. I love having a bit of "oomph" to my music, so I'm thinking a 2.1 setup would be optimal.

What are my options? Originally I was going to pick up a set of Blue Sky Exo 2.1's, but how would this compare to a pair of seperate bookshelf monitors, sub, and amp?

Thanks for your feedback.

Take a look at either the AudioEngine A2 or A5. Stereophile did a very favorable review on the A2.

You can also take a look at pro studio monitors. Go to your local Musician's Friend or Guitar Center, and take a look at their pro audio section. Mackie is a good brand to start with. Those studio monitors are what mixing studios use in mixing their own masters.

Audioengine A5 would be better than A2's. I use the A5's at home and A2's at work. Both are good but A5's are the better of the two given your price range. You could opt for a sub also if you feel a need. I'd try them before you buy a sub to add.

x2... I have been very impressed w/ my A5's... I do plan to buy a powered sub eventually, but these little things pump out really nice, clean bass...

Has anyone tried that AudioEngine sub? I thought it's kind of expensive at $349 for an 8" sub.
