Wooooboy. Kenwood sure has hiss..
It disappears after 5 minutes. For me.

i haven't heard the player, but don't remember reading about this high freq. issue in any other reviews. People have complained about the hiss though. Maybe the first one is an isolated problem with your unit (again, i'm just guessing).
Let's wait for some Kenwood owners to post.

That player uses a hard drive, right? The high pitched noise that "goes up and down" would be the hard drive.

The high freq pitch is coming from the headphone out ..
lol - the hard drive doesn't affect signal path,

That sounds like a defective unit to me. I should be getting my HD60GD9EC shortly, so I will be able to verify this soon.

Kenwoods have LOTS of hiss. It's definitely a letdown for extra sensitive IEMs, but it should be tolerable with ER4P's (not so sensitive earphones).

Nope - not defective .
Btw my friends hd60gb9ec (omg they need to get new names..) has the same issue.
The high pitch (sounds sort of like high freq. or clipping if you ask me).
My I would highly recommend someone young with good ears to try and hear this, as older head-fiers might not be able to hear it. ^_^
Mm - just on a side note- the shure attenuator does remove the hiss - however the high freq noise is still audible (though to a much lesser degree).

actually , these new models (not the hold hd10/20's) are supposed to have reduced hiss.
I will be making sure this is not a defective model soon - - 2 of my friends say they have ordered this model from pricejapan recently, and Ill ask them.

Yes, I know, they should have reduced hiss. The HD10GB7 should have reduced HD20GA7's hiss by a lot (being next generation), but it actually had the same amount of it.
The HD30GB9 has hiss, and from early reports the HD60GD9 (3rd gen Kenwood) hisses as well.

What's the point off lossless support if the signal is that dirty?
Why get the Kenwood at all if these are known issues?

lol, this is pretty lame. For $625, I want something absolutely pitch dark quiet. In fact, no-hiss is first and second is sound quality.

Yes it has the high pitch hiss, with white noise spaced evenly across the center. SupremeEX rids of the "dirty" and high frequency hiss, and replaces it with a more subtle hiss. The problem is that you can't use EQ with it 
What I noticed is that my almost a year old HD30GB9 has a toned down hiss, much more than a brand new one. Maybe it has something to do with age?

Thank god I didn't buy the kenwoods.. It looked nice all of them well most. I will stay with my Cowon D2 and Sony A818

the kenwood has a lot of distortion. with non-sensitive phones it should sound a bit like vinyl with a warmer less detailed sound. you can see here that it is by far the player with most measured distortion.
it surely is not a well-thought out portable source considering the phones that most people use portably.
