iave had an x5L, a zen vision:m and now a zune.
the zune80 is definitely my favorite. it just has this clarity while remaining welcoming at the same time that is a notch above the others.
this is all with the super.fi 5 pros.
soundstage is excellent, one reason i got the super.fi 5 pros is they had a good soundstage rep for IEM's in that price raneg -and the zune80 does it justice.

So, I suppose Zune 2 80GB might be a bit "bright" with other IEMs/Headphones; trebbles are really in background with SF5Pro.
(And the frequency response curve is so "chaotic" that it's almost impossible to correct. But they are damn good for trip-hop and electro. )

The new Sony players are all excellent sounding but, for some reason, I seem to get fatigued when I listened to them. After a short period of time (1hr maybe) it starts to feel & sound claustrophobic (hope that's right). Sony has a great sound stage but the D2 seems more "open" to me. And this is despite the fact that I hear the difference in the bass between the 2 also - the lows being better and soooo clear on the Sony's. I feel the Sony players over-emphasize the low freqs and this causes the others to be overwhelmed a bit. Beats the ear drums just a bit too much. I think the mids are a bit lacking though. Sony makes stellar players but IMO the D2 is "Slightly" better.
PS: Guess I'm just gonna' go get a Touch or settle for a refurb 60gb iPod 5g w/video. The 5g sounds pretty good (had 1 but my 20yo got it stolen) and I may play w/RockBox and see how it goes.

I hope I could try a D2 soon !

definitely possible, hopefully others can chime in. or maybe my ears are a bit biased. i can say for some classical i might want a bit more treble so far but i havent heard enough wththe zune80 yet. been listenin to mostly rock, indie, electronic, 80's
trip-hop and electro are tip-top!
i used to spin breaks and haev a half a crate of electro.
some good trip hop:
lder Ninja Tunes label type stuff like Coldcut, Funki Porcini, Amon Tobin, Up Bustle & out, Cinematic Orchestra, TOSCA (tip top stuff) and of course, the mothafookin KINGS of that type of genre KRUDER & Dorfmeister!

80gb ipod video w/ rockbox doesnt improve much from stock firmware, rockbox is bullsh't to use with hard-drive ipods, its just too slow and laggy, and battery goes out in a few hours.
80gb ipod video sounds same as 60gb.

So I'm better off just getting a 80gb Classic and getting it over with then? My D2 rocks but I really feel the Classic gets a bad rap cause people have become so anti-ipod on the net. Hooked up my HD202's and it sounded pretty sweet. Using the EQ really made no difference though - and I'm an EQ freq!!! Still, the Classic seems to be better for my needs (hookup in the car coming soon) as the D2 has to be utilized through the HP jack. Don't like that too much. Great player for being mobile as it really sounds spectacular.

I've never posted before..I owne a D2...fantastic sounding player with cool features and expandability!I also own an 8gig Zune which never gets mentioned here...its also a great little player with great sound....both my Atrio M8s and Sennheiser Px100s sound fantastic on this player which goes to work with me and gets almost as much use as my D2.

Borrowed a Classic 80gb and I can honestly say the SQ is severely lacking. No depth or separation, sound stage is almost totally flat. The EQ was a complete horror as it never added to the music - it distorted!!! I'm sorry I even considered an ipod again. The D2 has ruined me as far as the ipod is concerned. I'm no fanboi of Cowon either as I love the new Sony lineup as well. I'm only waiting (probably for a LONGGGGG time) for a 32gb player to be launched and I'm gonna' go get me some!!! well, now I need to just be patient and see what's around the corner for my next DAP.

Had the Zen 32gb and it was disappointing. Sold it and cut my losses - total waste once you can hear the difference. It sounds decent, but no way should it be so far up the chart. The Classic is a better sounding AND performing player (though IMO the sound staging is slightly better w/the Zen. Volume is horrible though), no doubt's about it.

To each his own, but the D2 is the best sounding DAP I've ever heard.
