I think so, I have both, one thing I noticed is that when listening to music which has an ver bassy periods in, the A818 seems to quieten the mid and high tones, however the 829 doesnt seem to do that as much..

Interesting as they are supposed to have the same hardware and codec. However I have seen several posts like yours, they must have tweaked something. Did A818 have clear bass? I have it set to 1 all the time, makes for such a smooth bass sound.

The 829 also has a bigger soundstage than the 808/818. I think the 829 definitely sounds better, it was enough of an improvement for me to sell my Zune 80 which I'd never imagined doing!

P.S Out of interest, where did you read that the 82x had the same hardware and codec as the older series?

Most likely in the start of this thread or the one called "finally got my NWZ-A829". There were quite a few threads on the player when it was just announced and first people bought it.

I may be wrong but as far as I understand, the 818 and 82x are pretty much the same, 82x series has nicer screen+bluetooth+capacity and that's pretty much it.

I love the SQ of the 829, never owned the 818 so can't compared.

The 81x/80x are exactly the same but the 829 is a definite improvement. I still use my 808 and I can clearly hear the difference going back and forth between them. It's basically the same 808/818 sound but spread over a larger area.

Small improvement maybe, but a welcome one, as the big soundstage was one of the main reasons I held on to the Zune. But the 829 was 'spacious' enough that I was able to sell off the Zune with no regrets at all.

To me, the decision is pretty obvious: Get the A728 (A828 without the BlueTooth, which you said you don't need). The general consensus seems to be that the newest Sony players sound better than the last model. So if it's not a decision between a Sony and a Cowon (which is a personal sound quality preference), I don't see why you wouldn't get the A728.

Yea if you have that option. In some countries you can only buy certain versions, I couldn't buy the non-bluetooth version for instance so had to pay extra for a feature I don't need. Maybe if I someday find some quality BT headphones at least I have the option to use it for workout / cycling.

i have a Jays Bluestreamer 2, and i use my q-jays with it. Currently use it with my sony ericsson k850i, until i have enough $ for a sony nwz-a828.

K850 sq obviously isnt the quite shabby, but when listening to music over BT, the quality doesnt worsen as many would think. Not with the bluestreamer 2 anyway.

also, the q-jays lack a little bass sometimes but the bluestreamer 2 seems to get a little more bass out of the q-jays which i like

check one of them out for your sony
