A similar product is M-Audio's Microtrack, however it does not have a digital out.

Looks like more devices will soon be on the way....

http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/P...P-8628L_br.pdf

Looks good for those with the ibasso D1, but these are really PMPs, not DAPs.

Only looking at these PMP devices as spdif source output for the ibasso D1 or other spdif DAC means that the quality will based on the audio file decoder and spdif bus to correctly implement quality biphase mark code signal with <1-10 ns jitter. It also depends on if they added in some DSP to the decoded audio signal you don't know about or can't turn off.

But, yeah, if you listen to them with the stereo out, that may produce fairly poor audio since it is from the comsumer grade DAC and AMB. That is why we are looking for these devices in this thread with spdif so we can use an external DAC and amp. I view these purely as sources. All I really want is

(Large Memory)>(file organizer/playlist)>(audio decoder)>(digital out)>

Great list!!

This is probably a stupid question, but would it be possible to attach a device with usb host capabilities to the ibasso (with a usb cable) and play music? Sorry if this is too far off topic.

Yeah, that is a good question, which Kramer asked in another thread, but where I don't remember. The main problem is the USB host specification requires the host to deliver current to power USB devices. For a cumputer plugged into the wall or a laptop with a huge battery that is no problem. This would quickly drain the battery of a DAP if it was used as a USB host for any length of time. I think this issue came up with the Pico.

The MZ-1 has separate optical out and in. And yes this could be stickied.

Default time to add iPod Classic to the list

See the recent announcement by Wadia, covered at Stereophile, that reveals that current generation iPods (Classic, Nano 3G, some others) can output SPDIF digital to any device with an Apple "authentication chip."

Stereophile: Wadia Announces Launch of iPod Dock with S/PDIF Output

One thing that is portable (enough) and has optical out is the Apple Macbook or Macbook Pro.

Sure, its not pocketable but there's a good chance you'll have it with you anyway, which is a plus on the portability side.

Does it qualify for the list?
