If you just want to use the headphone out to a headphone, then the H120 is an adequate choice, but not the best when compared to other players. The H120's strengths are a decent analog lineout, and a great optical out. Other players can best the h120 headphone out quality (ipod and x5 come to mind).
maybe I did not explain well, You must experience the following combo:

1. Normal Ipod like devices with analog output to a headphone amp.

2. iriver H120 with headphone amp with DAC input(or similar configuration).

Is there a significant difference in sound quality between, the two?

Yes, I'll note that at the beginning of the list, thanks!

Does anyone know if the Archos 404 has digital out through the DVR dock? I noticed the DVR dock has coaxial out, but can it output stereo from MP3s or is it only 5.1/stereo AC3?

I hate to burst your bubble but this device has no digital out.

The USB jack is for computer connection, and it has two 3.5mm stereo line out jacks. No optical jack on the unit.

I guess the email I got from their engineer, and them answering my question on the site are both wrong?

"Daniel Wallner

Line out is either analog or coaxial S/PDIF (selectable)."

"

Pacemaker says

The Pacemaker has S/PDIF out via coaxial.

OverlordXenu says

What will the S/PDIF be over, coaxial, optical, or what?
