Thanks...
I also found this pic:
I guess "Bling Bling" docks will start to pop up for the Q5 once it will be launched.
I will probably take one and use it with an external DAC and amp

I know, I'm trying to consider it...But I've seen that the interface is really sluggish, and I wanted to use it as an alternative to my pdaphone, and just get like a KRZR for tethering, but the Apps I use on it won't work on it (Windows Mobile != Windows CE, sadly), so I think it's a no-go for me.

among the Sony pcdp's I see that the majority are made in Malaysia...are units made in Japan "better" in terms of their components, specifically the optical line out? I am anxious to get a mini optical and pair one of these pcdp's with the Beresford Dac for the bedroom set up.

Yes, ALPINE works differently though. But it will take the raw digital feed from the iPOD in S/PDIF and run it through a 24bit Burr Brown DAC, and at the back of the head unit, you would have options for digital output as well, I think.
Ok well we need to verify it. Because from the picture shown of the device, there are no digital out.
And also, be weary of an cheap DAP player that has an optical out dock. We just went through this with the Ewoo, who VInnie even commented on. There is the MSB iLink for $2000 buy then they modify your iPod first. There system works because they are pulling the signals by bypassing the DAC.
With the Alpine car unit, it has a box that someone works like an interface between your head unit and your ipod. When you turn on your head unit, your ipod displays ALPINE, sort of like when you plug your ipod into your computer and it says DO NO DISCONNECT. ALPINE has written some kind of iTunes code and dumped it into the coverter box. This way, the iPod doesn't need to be moddedm because the ALPINE system pulls the direct digital data via USB as if it were going back into itunes. The Alpine system works but must be controlled from the Alpine head unit. You cannot control your iPod directly. Only the Alpine Head Unit takes over the control of the iPod.
Any other cheap docks you read about like the ZicPlay EWOO, the sound quality is worse than standard iPod because all they do is take an analog signal and convert that to a digital signal, of which you would have to connect to a DAC. That is why the EWOO is a bomb, unless they choose to seriously fix things up!

Thanks for the clarification! Umm...shouldn't it be possible to build a cable that will have the SPDIF and nothing else? I have (probably delusional) dreams of using this unit as a semi-portable...

Hmmm, even if it were battery operated, this kinda stretches the limits of portability.

To fight this sticky request, strong enough, you are not.
To ask others, carry on this quest, they will...
