i'm headed that way with my iriver h140 - rsa sr-71 - ety er4s
i'm considering an upgrade to a microdac and custom molds for my ety's. how does the optical on the h120 do with the external dac? i tried using my h140 optical out with an m-audio transit usb sound card, and there were many sample errors. does the the headroom dac do a good job with your h120?
EDIT: Actually, the cable in the link above is not the *exact* cable that I have. I got mine about a year ago from The Sound Professionals. If you look closely at my pic's you'll see that one end of the cable is a built-in right-angle Toslink mini connector, and the other end is a standard right angle Toslink (not mini). I had to add one Toslink mini adapter to that end of my cable (to make it a Toslink mini at both ends). That specific cable doesn't seem to be on The Sound Professionals website anymore. The one that is in the link above is standard Toslink at both ends, so you would have to add two Toslink mini adapters. I can't remember where I got my adapter from, but I think I remember seeing them recently over at Headroom, and you can probably find them at many other places as well.
So I understand that the DAP is there only for data, the microDAC is getting a perfect clean signal, and the DAP doesn't have any impact on sound quality? if so, that would be excellent, I am jealous.

honestly, it's superb. and my toslink cable is a fairly cheap one (non-glass). I have had literally no sample variation whatsoever with the Micro DAC out of the H120. it's as if they were made for one another. Good luck with it. I think you'll love it.

You've got it. The signal completely bypasses the DAP's built-in DAC (although the H120/140's built-in DAC isn't too shabby in its own right), so the DAP is literally passing a digital string of 0's and 1's optically to the external Micro DAC. The Micro DAC then does its magic and passes a pristine analog signal to your amp. Compared to feeding the amp directly from the H120's built-in DAC, the result is quite profound--not headspinning, mind you, but definitely noticeable and significant. Beware...once you get a taste, it's tough to go back.

I hear you.. after listening to my iPod lineout>amp all day, and I go home and hook my AlienDAC up to it, the difference is huge.
I hate headfi. Here's my history thus far in my short three months... at least for my portable. I'll probably make one for my home rig very soon too(I think DT 990s are in my very near future, unless I go nuts with Darth Beyers ).
When I first signed up I had this:
Then I read about IEMs outside of Shure(which was all I was familiar with), so I sacrificed capacity for clarity and detail with this:
Then I decided to go all out, and this is what I completed today:
...and of course what I'm currently playing on it:
They weren't kidding when they greeted me with sorry to your wallet I gotta chill on the buying though. I'm picking up an Impreza tomorrow, so you know I'm gonna have to test the AWD at Tahoe soon
