@tman1
I've seen it at my local Sony store. Looks like brushed aluminium. Very nice.

Wonder why they're delaying releasing the 16 gig in the US.
16 Gig on UK Sony site
also funny that they still show the old models on the top of the site.

Concerning prices the E series is not cheaper than the A series in France so don't worry about that.

That review is in French. Can you (or anyone who can read it) give more detail about what they liked better about the new S series vs. the A, how it sounded better, etc?

Would you mind telling us which Sony centre that is, in London? I've enquired with the Wood Green one, but they don't have them in stock yet. I am looking for the 16GB model, in Red.
Also, has anyone tried the new S series walkmen with ER6i or similar IEMs? How intense is hiss? Is it improved with respect to the A810 series?

Watford, probably around a week ago. I don't think it was on sale yet as no pricing information were available with the unit. It was in a display cabinet.
I'll be heading there later (hopefully) and will check it out.

They don't say much about the evolution between the new S and the A series, except that the new S series represents more than a simple evolution. They also state the new players are the best that Sony ever produced (i wouldn't really agree though as my Vaio Pocket is a step above the E430 for audio) and the S730 series is for audiophile use.

The E series is lacking several of the sound enhancements of the S series - its probable that they use different physical components as well. I think you can compare the A series to the S, but the E is really a low-end series for budget-conscious users...FWIW, even a Cnet reviewer is craving about the non-noise reducing S series new players (S638 in this case...)

I don't agree for a few reasons:
- first the sound enhancements you're talking about are not so useful, ok DSEE is nice but only for low bitrate mp3, and clear bass doesn't really deliver what i would call clear bass.
- secondly the E series is only 20€ cheaper in France (i'm comparing the two 8 GB models) and don't offer in-ear headphones.
- finally in their review GMP3 stated the E430 series is just a little bit under the S630 series for audio, and quite above the old S610 series. So i guess there can't be a huge difference between those two series.

The new 16gb S Series is da' shizzle!!!! Can't wait for it to hit the US - selling my A829 & 8gb D2 to fund the purchase. That, & my Touch 2G, and I'm good to go!!!!

I think you mean the "non-noise cancelling" players, since the canal phones do reduce outside noise.
That article is pointless, and even misleading:
- How can he know what it feels like in his hand (and sound like) if he's never even seen one?
- It will be available in 16 GB capacity
- According to the Sony sites, I believe it will be available in BLACK only for the 8 and 16 gb models, at least in the US.
Also, I have to disagree with the poster above that the adjustable Clear Bass on the adjustable EQ does not work well. Like just about every other review I've seen, I think it sounds great - tight, non-distorted bass. Helps to boost the bass a little when there is background noise while walking around, on the subway, etc.

OK, so I babelfished that review, and they don't really compare the sound to the A series. Also, it looks like they listened to the noise-cancelling version instead of the one with the EX 85 earphones.
I'm guessing they will sound like the A series (which is very good as is), with added FM reception and some sort of new sorting/playback gimmick.

According to the official Sony press release, that you can of course take with a pinch of salt, the new S series is the "best sounding Walkman ever"
Sony Europe Press Centre
Also I think that ClearStereo and ClearBass, which the E series don't have, can contribute to improving SQ considerably...
As for the CNET, I agree with you, which is why I wrote the FWIW (For What is Worth)

right, but the features they use to demonstrate this are the same ones already incorporated in the A series (sound enhancements, EX headphones). you never know though, maybe they will sound better.
also that press release mentions the FM radio for the B series only, but on the website they claim the S series will also have FM. guess I'lll wait and see.

Important: the E series has a glossy front while the S series is matte...at least for black.
