My H160 is born (Pic proof but hardly instructional)
Just further evidence that it can be done. I got the drive new from santech*net for $95 on eBay. Rockbox installed without a glitch.
I abandoned upgrading the battery to a 2200 mAh pack - for now. I had the wrong wrench and it took about an hour and a half to just get the 10 screws out. My hand was too bruised to even consider six more on the delicate circuit board.
It's all good. Battery life has actually improved. I seem to get around 14 hours. Apparently the drive is more efficient.

I say go for it! Just be sure to get a T5 Torx wrench. Opening the case was brutal. But replacing the drive was simple. I'm plenty happy now.

I have the Torx (came with my new Cameron Sino battery which I haven't had the noive to put in yet!)
Hmmm...I'll do some research into the cost of a 30gig, seeing as the 40gig Toshiba is so hard to get.
Cheers for the inspiration, cooperpwc!

Gonna do that with my H120, but replacng it with a CF card 32GB+ in size when their price comes down.
Have an iPod 2G 2200 mAh battewry that I'm contemplating on installing ATM, but worried about its compatibility even if I have taken the necessary procedure of inverting the connection.
Is your battery an iPod battery? Or is it specifically designed for the iRiver?

For the iRiver, so no need to change polarity, AFAIK. Been over to misticriver? Dead helpful...

The battery is specifically sold for the iRiver. Santacockatoo is the seller on eBay. But I still haven't put it in. (I'm getting the Torx first. It came with a Torx wrench that is good for the two side black screws but not big enough to properly fit the silver screws.)
In tems of the drive, you indeed have to be sure it has the correct connector. Toshiba 60GB MK6006GAH 1.8" Hard Drive is the correct 60 GB one. (I also found the 80 GB model on eBay for $250! Not worth it IMHO.)

Isn't it something? Today I was showing more than 14.5 hours after recharge. And it really is burning at the rate of ten or eleven minutes per 1% of battery.

Scary Battery Life? Fat Bat upgrade
My torx wrenches finally arrived and I replaced the battery. Not as difficult as i thought. In fact, it took less than half an hour.
No glitches. I charged my new 2200 mAh battery and then started listening to it after setting Rockbox's battery setting to the new capacity. At first I was disappointed that the Rockbox info page only equated my new 100% capacity with 16 hours and 15 minutes. Not bad at all but not a huge improvement over the old much smaller capacity battery.
The thing is... It's displayed that same '100% and 16h15m' for more than an hour. It finally dropped to '99% and 16h05m'. So apparently it will take a lot of listening for Rockbox to figure out what is going on and give an accurate display. But it's looking like I could be getting scary battery life from the combined efficient larger drive and fat bat.

Morning update. Turned on my H160. I guess that this caused Rockbox to recalculate based on my listening yesterday.
26+ hours remaining at 94%.

You should get 28-32 hr's with the 2200mah. Congrats on your upgrade. I've got one H160, an H130 (wife's), and two stock H140's. I've been contemplating whether I should get another 60 gig drive for one of the stock units.
