The 2g mini has the laser etched printing with the drive size on it and the buttons on the click wheel are color matched to the color of the unit.

Well, I sourced a 2nd gen 4GB iPod Mini for $50 (in good condition with a couple of extras). I'll probably keep it as is for the time being so I can see how I like the sound and see what shape the battery is in. If its good, I'll keep it and then probably put a 16GB card and possibly a replacement battery in (where's the best place to get the latter, looking for something good quality, higher capacity than the stock one, but say about $10). I might also consider the DIYmod, but that depends if I've got money for a decent amp (great another thing to research...), which I'd rather go that route than with the 32GB card.
In the future, if prices fall enough, or a much larger one at the right price comes out, I might consider upgrading it, but I'll probably just pass and buy whatever new player is hot at the time (hopefully there'll be a nice high capacity flash based, good sounding player available in the future).

Right, I got all that and it describes my player exactly. But the rockbox bootloader program says that it finds a 1g ipod, and only the 1g firmware runs on it.
I'm going to do a battery test tonight and see how it works.
EDIT: I let it run for about 5 hours with the standard rockbox build, and the thing's already dead. Luckily my sister has a really nice 6gb that I might be able to trade with her, and I could even put the 6gb drive in mine so she wouldn't lose any storage.

Punnisher,
Boot up the Apple firmware and get the model number out of "Settings->About"
First Generation:
4GB silver: M9160LL/A
4GB blue: M9436LL/A
4GB pink: M9435LL/A
4GB green: M9434LL/A
4GB gold: M9437LL/A
Second Generation:
4GB silver: M9800LL/A
4GB blue: M9802LL/A
4GB pink: M9804LL/A
4GB green: M9806LL/A
6GB silver: M9801LL/A
6GB blue: M9803LL/A
6GB pink: M9805LL/A
6GB green : M9807LL/A
To Fallingwaters question about OGG, I haven't played any OGG files. I don't use OGG. But, FLAC plays flawlessly.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I doubt there is any reason for a 1g firmware to work on a 2g player, but I'll see what it says anyway. Plus the battery life (or lack thereof) is another indication.
I also scored a free 2g (I think!) from a friend, but has a broken click wheel cable, hopefully the 1g will fit it. I swear I'll get this player working if it's the last thing I do.
PouncePony, have you completed the battery life test with the optimized firmware? What are your findings?

The click wheel and cable are not compatible between the 1st and 2nd minis. :-(
I did a test with the optimized firmware and only got 1 hour more (19 vs 18).

looks like it doesnt work with a 1GB SanDisk ultra II on a mini first gen. I'll be trying to get myself an A-data 16gb..

do you have to have an adapter to plug in the CF card? I don't see the OP mention anything about it.

No sir. The interface for the micro drive is the same as the compact flash. It plugs right in.

Hmmm...my nephew has a 2nd gen mini that's dead...I wanna see if I can just HAVE his, lol.
IIRC, wasn't the consensus that the Mini sounded the WORST of all the iPods???

I think that that maybe attributed to its less that stellar internal amp as opposed to the DAC?
o_O?

nice, so it's just the other iPods that need the adapter then. Thanks for the info.
Does anyone know if this can be done on a Nano?

It won't work on the Nanos, they're much too small (Nanos' flash is soldered directly onto its circuit board if I'm not mistaken).

ive done this to my 4gb mini about a year ago...my mini is at 8gb now since the price of the 8gb card was close to 80 bucks when i got it. i found it to access the music faster than the microdrive, as well as better battery life.
