iPod software version 1.1.1 corrects the DC offset problem. I just measured it with the iPod in standby mode and with the iPod playing music, and only measured 0.2mV of DC offset. Generally speaking, anything less than 10mV is considered safe. Just to be sure, I tested the DC offset with both of my multimeters and got the same results both times.
Cheers,
Brad

I'm using version '1.1 PC' (model: 'MB145', format: 'Windows') and I've never had this DC offset problem. After 75+ hours of usage I still haven't experienced any hiss or other related problems mentioned here (even when I just turn off the iPod when playing a track at full volume. I usually don't play at full volume BTW, but I've tried this simply to see if I can reproduce the problem). And my AKG K701 headphones still work fine.
I'm now downloading and installing version 1.1.1, just to be sure.
EDIT: After reading some more messages by Clutz it may appear that my iPod had this problem but that I didn't notice it or that I didn't use or operate it in a way that 'activated' the hissing. Anyway, kudos to Clutz and the other people here who have put our (and Apple's) attention towards this issue.

Fixed in 1.1.1
I just ran the same tests as Clutz and others, and am seeing the same results. Looks like 1.1.1 fixes the problem.

Installing the US FW will not get rid of the volume limit, you would be wasting your time installing it.

nine, thanks for bringing the offset you measured in 1.1 to our attention in the first place, and to both you and Clutz for further testing (including Clutz's measuring it during music playback), and confirming the apparent fix of it with 1.1.1.
I can't remember any Head-Fi thread in recent times that got picked up and linked to by more sites and news outlets than this thread.
Best Regards,
Jude

Not sure if this is relevant, but I noticed when I plug my Sennheiser HD485s into my Samsung Helix (aka Pioneer Inno) a static "blip" can be heard through the phones when the unit is off.
Does this mean the same thing as what you are experiencing with your IPod??
