ipod + cables?
So, I don't really know anything about this stuff, so I was wondering...
(a) why does everyone connect their ipods to their amps via the ipod dock instead of the 1/8" slot,
(b) why do people use custom cables for this, and
(c) is there like an info. page where I can learn about all of this kinda stuffff????
Thxthx!

(a) ipod dock has lineout. It means that it will bypass the internal amplifier and send clean signal directly to the headphone amp. Using 1/8" will double amplify the signal, which will degrade the SQ.
(b) no need to use custom cable.

The lineout (iPod dock) has a true-er output than the headphone out, which works better with amps.
Some people think that using custom cables makes them sound better and look cooler.
I don't know =\

(a) there are 3 kinds (actually, only 2) of LODs. The "normal" one is used for all iPod (except the iTouch and iPhone). iTouch and iPhone need some different modification to work. The LOD for them work fine with all iPods but not vice versa. Last one is iMod dock which is used only with iMod/diyMod. Again, can be used with all iPods (consequently, will get some bass roll-off) but not vice versa.
(b) As said above, cooler lol. It also depends on your belief of cable effects. And, most importantly, custom means your own taste (length, kind of wires, connectors).

(a) What is imod, and how much is a good price to spend on one of those imod docks (or LODs)?

Ah, thanks.
And according to this: Red Wine Audio iMod the imod doesn't work on 6th gen classics, so where can I get an LOD that works on those?

Every LOD will work fine with the 6th gen Classic.
If you want to buy the iMod, keep in mind that it will cost you a 5/5.5th gen ipod + 250$ modding fee + 99$ cable.

If I have a 6th gen ipod all I need is that cable right? Any other modification is unnecessary, right?

No need to modify anything.

u can also find some fellow head-fier on this forum who specialize in DIY LOD's for you. it might be cheaper and u can tell them what length and etc u want.
DIY - Do It Yourself (i think). these are handmade by people on these forums and they have experience in this making it urself field too. i personally dont but i know some ppl on this site are famous for making LOD's.
