Lightbulb getting line-out performance form the headphone jack

if you have a portable (say an md player) that does not have a line out, is there a volume setting that will get you closer to line-out performance? should the volume be set to maximum, mid-way, or minimum to minimize amp distortion? does it make a difference?

Apple recomends setting the iPod volume to 3/4's when using amps/speakers.

You really can't recommend a "standard" volume setting, since the gain on the volume pot varies for every device. Apple has recommended "3/4" for the iPod, and Sharp has a certain number for each of their MD porties that don't have a dedicated jack. But every device is different.

I agree with Macdef. I have three sony pcdp and all of them have different volume settings before they are equal to the line out in loudness.

Probably a decent way to approximate

It's either a tan, or this is the Warhol edition of his picture
