Truly fine? Checked with a Digital Volt Meter? Ribbon cables can develop hairline fractures in the traces almost undetectable to the eye. Not saying that's the problem but sometimes it's hard to tell.

The foil is probably shielding material to help isolate high frequency radio signals (caused by the player's internal computer) to the player so as not to interfere with radio.

Default Broken PanaSonic

Hi, I have a broken Panasonic SL-SW960V. Really nice discman, it wasn't mine but was given to me to try and fix, now it is mine as the person purchased a new one when I couldn't do it in time. I can't figure out whats wrong with it but discmans arent really my specialty.

It was dropped and the motor does work but wont spin the CD. I've gotten the cd to spin a few times but only when the case was all taken off and the spindle on the top was loosened. The laser jumps back and forth for about 15 seconds then reports No Disk. I've tried cleaning the laser with a bit of windex and a Q-Tip, not much else I tried was very useful. I don't know what else to say but would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

EDIT: Found the problem... When the discman is turned on with the spindle very loose it will play. If I put the spindle on properly (tighter) it wont work, you can hear the motor clicking and trying to turn it, not enough power. However if the spindle is loose the CD flys all over the place on the inside and even the slightest breeze will junk it up... what should I do? I was thinking its my batteries possibly, but they are good quality energizer industrials, brand new... lubrication or some sort? If I need to lube it why would that have happened? Thanks.

Might be totally off here as I'm not familiar with the player but if there is a top spindle that clamps to a lower spindle (like vintage players) it shoud be loose as it is with the Sony D-5, D-555, etc. Magnetic attraction of the top spindle to the lower spindle will provide the disc centering and clamping force -- anything more than that and the motor will get loaded down. If not precisely adjusted the top spindle will fail to "float" in the upper chassis and may drag against the top.

Yah.. i don't think it is unbalanced.. it will only spin when it is ridiculously loose. If it is titled at all will drag and grind when it is this loose making it unuseable. Hmm anyone else have any idea why the motor wouldnt be strong enough to drive the spindle when its snapped on tightly at all?

Your description of the problem is difficult to understand. What do you mean by "any idea why the motor wouldnt be strong enough to drive the spindle when its snapped on tightly at all?" First off, the 'spindle' is the plastic part attached to the spindle motor drive shaft, which the CD itself is 'placed' on (in the case of older players) and held in place by a clamp in the lid.. In the case of newer players, the CD itself is actually 'snapped' onto the spindle to hold it in place. Are you actually unscrewing the spindle in some way from the spindle motor shaft to make it 'loose', as opposed to 'tight'? Just an uneducated guess, but I'm thinking that the spindle motor was jarred out of place by the aforementioned dropping of the player, causing the CD itself to rub on the inside of the player, causing the grinding noise you mentioned.

I'm not describing balance. I'm describing clamping force and height of the the base attached to the spindle motor and the height of the clamp above the CD. If it works like I think it works adjustment of the assembly is critical to the .5 mm.

D555, I think you are right, thats the only way I could see fixing it... But it doesn't clamp on extremly tightly so yes, dropping it at all would definatly potentially knock the thing off or loosen it to the point in wouldnt work... looks like I have some tweaking to do

Default Help with Sony D350 Discman

Hi,

I would really appreciate some advice with a faulty Sony D350 discman. Every works fine using batteries but nothing works when I use the mains adapter. The adapter is working as I put a voltmeter on the out put and it was giving 9v.

Thanks

If the AC adapter works and battery works then I would think the D350's problem would not be serious and could be:

1. Dirty, broken DC input jack.
2. Broken solder connection, board trace leading to the DC jack.
3. Perhaps a bad electrolytic capacitor and/or bad voltage regulator related to the DC input.

My guess is that a *competant* repair shop could troubleshoot and fix.

Hi, I'm experiencing a problem with my D-311

Everything works fine, but when I plug my headphone into the line out, it comes out with EXTREME bass noise. My total bithead, however, works fine with line out.

Can anybody help me? Any advice will be very thankful.
