Dilemma Fuze or Sony 638F
I stand before choosing a DAP. Hesitate between Sansa Fuze and Sony 638F.My main concern is the sound quality on flat eq setting. I don't like eq because it makes music sound unnatural to me. I have the headphones AKG 314p which I would like to continue to use with my new player. Rather listen to rock, metal and instumental music. Among my favorite bands such as Tool, Alice In Chains, Whitesnake, Opeth, The Haunted, Dream Theater are artists such as Mike Oldfield, Joe Satriani and Karl Sanders. I will be glad for every advice that will help me choose. Thanks.

Haven't heard the Sony but the Fuze is very good with flat EQ.
It sounds much better than my Ipod 5g, even with the 5g amped from line out.
The Fuze sound signature is very well balanced imo, nothing missing, nothing exagerated and the soundstage is amazing.

Yeah the Fuze has excellent flat output. The Sony has a slight boost in treble and bass, even in flat, but that may actually help with all that aggressive music that you listen to.

Go with the Fuze unless you need Sony's better interface. It's cheaper to boot.

fuze does flac...
sony doesn't do flac...
you're not goin' to get cd quality from the sony w/o massive wav files...
so unless you only play mp3s & enjoy the way the sony colors the sound, get the fuze...

i have Fuze and listen to rock/metal and some classical(sounds just incredible) and the sound is great, i doubt you'lll need the extra bass and treble for that king of music.

for your music preferences, either will work. Keep in mind that the fuze in flat setting is very true to the sound of the recording. The Sony in flat setting is like taking the fuze and turning on the "loud" option on that many car stereos have. Personally, I prefer the fuze, but have both. Another thing to consider are the audio formats these devices can support:
Sony: WAV, WMA, MP3, AAC
Fuze: WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, FLAC
I am using OGG and FLAC and I am loving it with my fuze.

Thank you all for your advices.
I like the instrumental music as well. Today i was in the shop and listened to Sony 638 and Cowon D2. I think that the sound of the Cowon took me a little bit more to taste. But after such a short time of listening its hard to be sure. Besides D2 is very large player and im looking for something smaller. I wonder maybe Cowon i7 is an option? Unfortunately there was not Fuze in the store so i could compare... :/

wow what store was that? Usually the Sony or D2 are not available for listening and there are tons of fuze laying around.

even though max quality AAC is not FLAC, it sounds awesome on the sony, and i am loving it there

I've not heard the Sansa Fuze but the Sony S639F is probably the best sounding player I have owned and I have owned alot of players like the Cowon D2 and iAudio X5.
The Sony is so great sounding that I wish there was a stereo widening function like they have on their mobile phones. Its strange how Sony have that stereo widening function on their walkman phones yet the function is not available on their walkman players.

Quick one for the Sony owners out there. I have never owned a Sony player before, but should hopefully be picking up my s639f today. Do Sony release system upgrades regularly and does anyone know if they have ever released a flac capability on any of their players?

The 816 I had previously had almost no updates for it at all. I think there was one to fix a Rhapsody issue, but that was it.
If you get the 639 I'd do so assuming pcm wav files are all you're going to have as a lossless option for the life of the player.

I ordered the 639 despite it being 50 dollars more expensive & not supporting FLAC, and 1 year less warranty... for two reasons. First, the size of the 639 is smaller and looked a whole lot nicer. Second reason is because I've owned a sansa clip before and did not really like the sound out of it.
