Archos 5 vs Cowon O2?
Hey guys, I am very seriously considering the Cowon O2 for its support of a huge number of formats (both audio and video,) the sound quality, and its good battery life. However, the Archos 5 looks like it's much better for watching movies (as it has a better screen) and the internet feature looks great. I am concerned about how the 5 will sound with a decent pair of headphones and an amp (probably not as good as the O2?) I would use whatever I get to occasionally watch movies, listen to a lot of lossless music, and use whatever special features it may have. What would you guys do in this situation?

If you're looking to play 720p video on the O2, it's a no-no at the moment. Even it's advertised that way, a preview on anythingbutipod says the contrary.

In this situation it as follows: the O2 is the budget player, but its supposed to play more codecs (audio & video). The Archos 5 is the premium player, more solid build, higher capacity, better screen, better for video out to a HD tv. Thing is, you'll have to pay a lot extra for the all the useful features on the Archos, including the line out for the tv viewing. The Archos also has an FM tuner, the O2 has none. Guess it's just about what your looking for, budget or, possibly, the best. IMO, and I'm a Cowon FanBoi somewhat, the Archos 5 is the better player.

Thanks for the input. Cost really doesn't matter to me. Will SQ be an issue with the Archos?

traditionally, archos has had problems with SQ, and while the archos 5 isn't up there with the zune or the fuse, it can now hold its own.
very attractive player. i might look into one once the price goes down.

So with a low-end hifi setup (ATH-AD700 and portable amp [like the d2]) at most with all flac music, I won't need to worry too much about poor quality?

WOW - I didn't know the Archos 5 plays Ogg & FLAC!!! Now THAT is kool!!! And, audio playtime is up to 22hrs, video 7hrs. NICE, I should have gotten this instead of my Zune, the screen is so friggin' HUGE!!!

Hmm all the reviews said the playtime was only 12 hours audio and 4 video. Did they change the stock battery or something? Or is the 22/7 listed on their site only if you use that battery dock accessory? I wonder, since I'm on the fence and if they really did increase battery life somehow on the stock battery to 22 hours/4 hours i'd buy it right now.

In the latest firmware, it got a battery life improvement, OGG n FLAC support, and a few others.
That's why at places like Cnet, it still lists it as 12 hours, since they most likely just didn't change the firmware.
