4th Gen iMod sound "dated"?
So...in terms of todays portables and their line-outs, where does the 4th Gen iMod now stand?
Before it was the "pinnacle" of portable SQ, but now today with so many great offerings (including the 5.5 iMod)....where does it stand? My iMod has somehow gone missing while in Vegas
So, I'm contemplating on the used, I can find them for $75 in great condish. Would it be worth getting another and DIYmodding, or would it be worth spending the dough on a new iMod, OR just getting a Touch and being content with it's line-out?
Decisions decisions....sucky. But in a good way....sort of, lol.

Nate, I just sold my iModded 4th Gen 60 gB iPod Photo not because it sounded bad or poor but because I wanted more capacity. IMO it sounds better than my new 160 gB iPod Classic (using a LOD).
So if you are happy with just 60 gB get a 4th Gen and iMod it. Good luck.

Yeah, after I lost my nano, I asked to mail up the iMod. It can't be found, and apparently the house has been torn apart looking for it, so alas, my iMod is missing.
So, I'm contemplating another one, (and 20 gig is more than enough for me as it sits for strictly music). I'm thinking about modding it and putting in a 32gb flash drive to extend the battery life. But after all is said and done, I'll be looking in the ballpark of a new iPod with much more capacity, and around the same, if not more, battery life than the modded 4th gen. Not to mention thinner.
I guess it's a matter of how significant the change in SQ is going from a newer line out as really, the only experiences I have with the iPod LO is with the Nano's(all 3 gens). I have no idea how the classic, touch or 5/5.5 LO sound. Some people say they sound the same, others say they don't.
One things for sure though. I'm going to have to live with the SQ out of the 4th gen LO if I get one for atleast a couple weeks till I get the opportunity to mail it out or get it done by RWA....

Mine sounds good as ever. Use it all the time and especially on long flights. I just love the sound and how well it is presented.
I have looked for nothing else for the past three years. And I am prone to spend money on the many things found on here!!!!

I have 3G, 4G Photo, 5.5G and Classic. They all sound exactly the same through line out. Headphone output depends on the impedance of the cans used.
See ya

No, the 4th Gen iModded sounded a bit clearer and more detail than the new Classic (via an LOD). However the difference was not much and you had to listen for it. Do let the Classic burn-in for at least 75 to 100 hours, it made a difference to me.

I don't have an iMod. I did a direct A/B line level matched comparison between my home CD player and my iPod, and I couldn't detect any difference. Exactly like the source is what I want. I don't want attempts to "improve" upon it.
See ya

I had the iMod for a while, and the sound quality was good, but still comparable to the best portables out there. The best advantage I had with my diyMod was the big capacity and the more powerful output than a normal player. In the end, though, I decided the sound quality improvement was not worth the big money I spent for it, especially because of my conversion from portability towards home electrostats. So, in the end, I sold it and will put that money into a home dac.
An iRiver E10 will do the duty of portable source.
